Q&A with Summer U at University High School
What makes Summer U at University High School unique?
Our core camps are led by seasoned educators and adult alumni of University High School. Each camp leader chooses a topic they are passionate about to share with children. For example, our rocketry camp is led by actual rocket scientists and our robotics camp is led by our FIRST Robotics Mentors. All of this takes places on University High School’s 80-acre campus and conducted through the lens of our six core values – diversity, commitment to excellence, commitment to personal responsibility, creativity, stewardship, and mutual respect, support, and trust.
What activities are offered at Summer U?
Each of our camps are focused on getting hands on with topics ranging from cultural and language exploration, creative writing, theatre, podcasting, or film production to game development, engineering, rocketry, robotics, and Minecraft by Indy STEM Camps.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
On average we have one adult for every six campers.
How much time do the campers spend outside?
In some cases, campers are outside almost the entire time. In other cases, they are indoors except for breaks. The topic being explored dictates where campers spend their time.
Does Summer U provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
Parents are asked to provide lunches and snacks that do not require refrigeration or heating. Water bottle fillers and vending machines are available on campus.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
Most camps begin at 9 a.m. or 1 p.m. and are 3 hours per day. Campers get right to their activities and take breaks throughout the camp. For campers who stay between morning and afternoon camps, adults supervise their lunch and free time either inside or outside. A few camps will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and campers stay together for the entire time. Sports camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
Our core camps are led by seasoned educators and adult alumni of University High School. Sports and Minecraft camps are staffed by counselors trained by experienced adults.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
Our buildings are fully accessible.
What is the cancellation policy?
We ask that parents notify us of cancellation at least 17 days before the start of a camp to receive a full refund.
