What makes Forester Camps unique?

Forester Camps is an academic residential camp on a college campus. We give students and opportunity to live as a college student for a week, in the classroom, the dorms and the communal social life, the college experience.

What activities are offered at Forester Camps?

We offer hands-on college learning in the classroom, lab and in the field. For example in Nursing Camp you might get to learn how to dress a wound, in AgBio Camp you might get to learn how drones are revolutionizing food production and in Animation Camp you might get to see your character come to life at a red-carpet event. Plus there are social and ‘campy’ activities like camp fires by the lake and ziplining.

What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?

The camper-to-counselor ratio varies from each camp but is traditionally around 7-1 which does not include the faculty who teach the subjects throughout the day.

How much time do the campers spend outside?

Each camp has outdoor educational time but some camps fill find themselves outdoors more often, like AgBio or Criminal Justice and others like Worship Leadership and Nursing will find themselves indoors more.

Does the camp provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?

Food is provided as part of the overnight on-campus experience.

How old are the counselors and how are they trained?

Our counselors are students at Huntington University in the field of study the camp is teaching about. They go through multiple days of training on everything from CPR to mental health to leadership development.

What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?

The university has resources for our students to attend college with various levels of need, those accommodations can also be a part of our summer camping experience.

What does the camper’s living situation look like?

Campers room in the college dorms with a roommate. Depending on the camp week, their is a communal shower (with individual bathing) or a shared bathroom between two dorm rooms. Dorm rooms have air conditioning.

How do parents and campers communicate?

We do not take our campers phones or enforce phones be left home. However, for the best overall experience, we strongly request phones only be used during specific times of the day. Parents are free to communicate with their campers at this time or in case of an emergency, with the camp director.

How does your camp handle homesickness?

Homesickness is handled on a case-by-case bases aligning with the campers individual needs. Typically the students are so busy and so excited to be learning this is not a major issue. Our counselors have trainings on mental health and techniques to handle serious situations to may arise.

What are the meals like at camp?

Meals are served in our dining hall. There are a variety of options and in a buffet style. With the schools students having a variety of allergies and food obversions, our staff is very equipped to deal with most food allergies and dietary restrictions.

Can parents visit Forester Camps?

Camp is only 5 days. Parents are encouraged to drop their camper off and allow them to live in the safe but slightly challenging space camp and ‘going to college’ that we offer until they can come and get their camper on the last day.

What percentage of campers return every year?

Over 40% of our campers have come back to the same camp for a second or third year. Many of them also come to college at Huntington University. Several students also come back to different camps to experience different fields of study or experiences.

Is the schedule highly structured, or do kids have a lot of free choices?

The schedule is highly structured. Each camp has different methodologies for teaching but their days remain full with instructional time and even the social components are ‘free time’ with parameters around location and opportunities.

Is transportation available to and from camp?

Not typically, no.
