Pecar Park & Nature Center

Helen Pecar Park offers unique opportunities for Indy families.

Pecar Park & Nature Center is nestled in the outskirts of Avon, Indiana, and opened to the public in 2019. In 2021, a new one-mile trail was added around the perimeter of the property.

The amenities at Pecar Park offer something for the entire family, and it serves as a satellite park from Washington Township’s Avon location.

The Nature Center at Pecar Park

The Nature Center houses several different animals, including the park’s two sulcata tortoises named Jack and Diane; Maize, a friendly corn snake; an iguana; a Cuban tree frog; aquatic turtles; and many other critters. The animals that live at Pecar Park’s nature center are there because of a partnership with A Critter’s Chance, a Plainfield-based animal rescue organization. Most of the critters you see at the nature center are available for adoption (with the exception of Jack and Diane).

Events within the Nature Center range from art classes, critter feeding and indoor scavenger hunts. The facility is also available to rent for small parties, classes or events.

Outdoor Exploring

Walk through the Pecar Park nature center and you’ll find yourself in a large, green space with a new playground, eight primitive campsites available to rent (that do not include water or electricity), an outdoor learning center and several walking trails.

Just beyond this area, visitors will find a pond full of tadpoles, ducks, geese and other water creatures featured in the park’s pond exploration program. There is also a ninja course with rope climbing, tire jumping and other challenges. A prairie, just beyond the pond, will soon have another walking trail, with bridges linking the vast areas together.

Special Events at the Pecar Park

For those that want the full park experience, Pecar Park & Nature Center will host Fall Break Camp on October 11-22, 2021. Activities include all the amenities at Pecar Park, with visits from the park naturalist and critter friends, as well as cooking, crafts, sports and more.
