New Playground Coming to Indy’s Far East Side

Grassy Creek Regional Park is expected to open in summer 2024.

A park on Indy’s Far East Side is getting a new look! Grassy Creek Regional Park, located between 30th Street and Mitthoefer Road, is set to receive a makeover. The revamped park will feature a new community center and playground. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 21, 2023, with the park’s opening expected in summer 2024.

Grassy Creek Regional Park is located on the Far Eastside and consists of 175 acres of mixed-use parkland. The park currently features a diverse range of nature, including lowlands, wetlands, and forests. On the park’s south end, community members can enjoy the basketball and tennis courts, a splash pad, picnic shelters, and open greenspace.

The new park will include a nature center with a bird-watching area, multipurpose rooms that will be available for rent, and more. The playground will showcase a treehouse structure and a bird outlook, providing exciting play options. Additionally, it will include an accessible sensory tunnel and many other engaging features. The park will also include picnic areas and new trails, enhancing the connectivity of the larger park.

“These are transformational upgrades for a Far-Eastside neighborhood park,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “Thanks to our Circle City Forward initiative, the new environmental community center and park extension will offer something for residents of every age and ability, from education to recreation to the natural beauty of our environment.”

The Grassy Creek Environmental Community Center aims to offer various programs centered around environmental education. Additionally, it will provide space for community events. Indy Parks secured an additional $2.95 million from the City to purchase an additional 119 acres of land to extend the park.

Completion is set for the summer of 2024. Stay tuned for more updates!
