Getting Kids Ready for Back to School Season

Summer is winding down, and now is the time when families begin shifting their focus from vacations and late nights to school supplies and new routines. Going back to school is definitely an exciting time for both kids and parents, but it can also bring some stress and uncertainty along with it. Sean McCool, Center Director at Clearbrook KinderCare in Westfield, shares practical tips for easing the transition, helping families establish healthy routines, reduce anxiety and set kids up for a successful start to the school year.

What are some of the biggest challenges that families face when preparing for a new school year?

One of the biggest challenges families face is getting everyone back into a consistent routine after a more relaxed summer schedule. For younger children especially, there can also be uncertainty about new teachers, classrooms and expectations, which can create anxiety for both children and parents.

What strategies can parents use to create a smoother transition from summer to school?

I encourage families to start reintroducing school-year routines a few weeks before the first day of school. Start gradually shifting bedtimes and wake up times a little bit each night. Practice morning routines and figure out where the potential challenges will come. Maybe getting dressed before eating breakfast means spilled food and clothing changes, or packing a diaper bag in the morning leads to forgetting key things. If you practice ahead of time, you’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t before the school year starts, and that gives you time to make adjustments.

It’s also important to start talking about the upcoming school year: what your child can expect, what might be new or different. For younger children, reading books about starting school, visiting the school or classroom if possible, and involving them in preparations like picking out a backpack or laying out their school clothes the night before can ease the anxiety that comes with the unknown and help build excitement for the start of the school year.

How early should families start preparing for the school year?

Ideally, families should begin preparing two to three weeks before school starts. Making small adjustments over time is often more effective than trying to change everything at once. Starting early gives children time to adapt to new schedules, helps reduce stress for parents, and allows families to address any concerns before the first day arrives. It also creates opportunities for children to feel more comfortable and confident about the transition.

What are some effective ways to help students manage back-to-school anxiety or stress?

The most important thing parents can do is create space for open conversations. Encourage children to share what they’re excited about and what they’re nervous about. It’s easy to counter nerves with a focus on all the positive aspects of the new school year, but it’s so important to validate your child’s feelings.

Maintaining predictable routines, practicing separation for younger children, and emphasizing that it’s normal to feel nervous about new experiences can also go a long way in building your child’s confidence. If possible, meeting teachers or visiting the classroom before school begins can help children feel more familiar with their new environment.

Remember that every child adjusts at their own pace. Focus on creating a calm, positive environment and celebrate small successes during the first few weeks of school. Consistent communication between parents, teachers and caregivers can help everyone stay aligned and support a child’s needs. Most importantly, be patient with the transition. A little preparation, encouragement and consistency can make a big difference in helping children start the school year feeling confident, secure and ready to learn.
