Q&A with Indiana Repertory Theatre Camp:
What makes IRT Theatre Camp unique?
IRT Theatre Camp connects theatre professionals with the next generation of actors. Not only do the students get practical experience practicing their craft in fun and engaging ways, they also learn teamwork, confidence, and safe risk-taking – and they get to perform on the OneAmerica Mainstage in the historic Indiana Repertory Theatre! Our variety of classes allow students to try new opportunities like technical theatre or stage combat not available at other schools or camps.
What activities are offered at IRT Theatre Camp?
IRT Theatre Camp offers 4 weeks and 6 different subjects for actors to choose. Depending on the class, students will participate in theatre games, staged readings, memorization activities, blocking, choreography, singing as a chorus, building props, designing costumes, creating unique characters, practicing audition techniques, and more!
The mini camps will give actors age 5-7 the opportunity to use their imaginations and their bodies in ways that will build theatre foundations. Crafts, games, storytelling, and make-believe will all be part of the campers’ morning at the IRT.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
15 students to two counselors.
How much time do the campers spend outside?
This is an indoor camp. Campers will spend little to no time outside except during the drop-off and pick-up period.
Does the camp provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
Campers will need to provide their own lunches, water, and snacks. The IRT will provide refrigeration, but no microwaves. Mini campers will not stay for lunch and will be offered a light mid-morning snack. They should bring their own water.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
Camp begins with announcements and warm-up exercises. Each day has five 60-minute classes taught by highly trained theatre professionals. These classes will vary based on the subject matter but will involve movement and group participation. After the first, third, and fourth sessions there are 15-minute breaks, and after the second session is a 30-minute lunch break. The last 30 minutes of camp will bring all students together for closing exercises. All students will be able to perform on both our Upperstage and OneAmerica Mainstage. They will also get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Theatre. At the end of each week, the students will have a presentation to showcase all that they have learned.
How old are the counselors, and how are they trained?
Each class will have one instructor and one intern. The instructors are all over 21 and are theatre professionals with years of acting and teaching experience. The interns are college students studying to work in either theatre or education.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
We modify our classes so that all are safe and included. With notice, we will accommodate most needs. We have experience helping those who use a wheelchair, crutches and braces, have hearing or visual deficits, or are neurodivergent. If your student has special needs, please contact the camp director to discuss how we can work together to provide a meaningful experience.
