Spring Mill State Park in southern Indiana is a nature lover’s and history buff’s dream and one of our favorite Indiana State Park to visit with kids. It’s a unique blend of outdoor adventures and cultural experiences, perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Plus, it’s just a quick 1.5-hour drive from Indianapolis. Entrance fees are budget-friendly, too—just $7 for in-state vehicles and $9 for out-of-state vehicles.
Step Back in Time at Pioneer Village
One of the most captivating attractions at Spring Mill State Park is the meticulously restored Pioneer Village. This living history museum offers a fascinating glimpse into life in the early 1800s. As you wander through the village’s 20 historic buildings, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.

Throughout the village, you’ll encounter friendly and knowledgeable heritage interpreters dressed in period clothing. They’ll demonstrate traditional crafts like weaving, candle-making, and blacksmithing, sharing stories and insights into daily life in the 1800s. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and engage with these passionate interpreters – they’re eager to share their knowledge and bring history to life.

Heads up: The grist mill is currently getting some TLC, so it might be partially or fully closed during your visit. The good news is, the DNR is working hard to restore it, and you can find out more on their website.
The Caves at Spring Mill State Park
Spring Mill State Park boasts a fascinating network of caves ready for your discovery. Take a leisurely boat tour through Twin Caves, marvel at the formations within Donaldson Cave, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try spelunking in Bronson Cave.
- Twin Cave Boat Tours: Embark on a 20-minute guided boat tour through Twin Cave, where you’ll encounter unique cave formations and maybe even spot the endangered blind cavefish. Tours are available on weekends only from August to mid-October, 9 am-5 pm, for $3 per person.
- Donaldson Cave: The dry side of Donaldson Cave is open to all visitors and accessible from Trail 3.
- Self-Guided Recreational Caving: Several caves at Spring Mill State Park and the nearby Cave River Valley Natural Area offer limited access for self-guided recreational groups. Registration through the Indiana Karst Conservancy is required.
Visitor Tip: The caves stay at a cool 54 degrees all year round, so even in the summer, you might want to bring a light jacket!
Connect with Nature at the Lakeview Activity Center
The Nature Center, also called the Lakeview Activity Center, is perfect for learning about the park’s plants and animals. You’ll find interactive exhibits, and you can even see some live snakes and a turtle! There’s a special kids’ area, too, with a puppet stage, puzzles, and coloring.

Hike the Trails
Spring Mill State Park’s seven hiking trails, over 1,300 acres, provide options for all fitness levels. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike, you’ll find the perfect path to immerse yourself in the park’s natural beauty. The park also features an accessible trail for those with mobility challenges.
Honor a Hoosier Hero
You can also pay tribute to a true Hoosier hero at the Grissom Memorial, conveniently located near the park entrance. It’s dedicated to the life and achievements of astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom, one of the original Mercury astronauts and the second American in space. Check out cool exhibits like his spacesuit and the Gemini 3 Molly Brown space capsule – and the best part is, admission is free!
Camping
Looking to extend your adventure? Pitch a tent or park your RV at Spring Mill State Park’s campground. There are over 200 campsites, including 8 accessible sites, offering full hookup and electric options. Youth groups can also enjoy the dedicated Youth Tent Camp. For any last-minute needs, the Camp Store is open from mid-April through October, stocking firewood, food, and other camping essentials.
