Skating and Bumper Cars at Avon Ice Rink

Avon Ice Rink

Ice skating and bumper cars are a juxtaposition that you usually wouldn’t think go together. But happily, you can find both in the same place at Avon Ice Rink, located inside Washington Township Park. The rink opened to the public on November 23 and stays open through January 6, 2019.

Ice Bumper Cars at Avon Ice Rink

Now in its second year, Avon Ice Rink offers skating and bumper car rides on an alternating basis: ice skating happens at the top of each hour for 30 minutes, followed by bumper car rides for the second half hour. Combo tickets are offered for purchase in person or on their website (avonicerink.com) that allow you to experience the fun of both for a full hour.

Iceless Ice Rink

One of the cool (pun intended) things about the Avon Ice Rink is that the rink itself isn’t made of ice. Instead, this “iceless” rink is built from a synthetic material that is coated with a non-toxic chemical, which makes the surface slick, smooth and easy to glide on, just like real ice. Because it’s an iceless skating rink, visitors can skate at the outdoor Avon Ice Rink is all types of weather, even if the temperatures happen to rise, as they sometimes do due to Indiana’s fickle weather.

The bumper cars were a huge hit when we visited, and there was quite a line forming to try them out. Fortunately, there are 10 cars going on the rink at once, so we didn’t have to wait too long for our turn. The bumper cars glide and slide across the iceless rink, sending riders spinning, careening and jostling into each other. It’s good, old-fashioned fun, and a different way to experience the rink. Riders who are 36 inches tall and 5 years of age can ride on their own, but kids under those requirements must ride with an adult.

For little ones who are still learning to skate, the rink offers gliders to hold onto, which make balancing just that much easier. You can bring your own ice skates, or you can choose to borrow some from the rink, which is included in the admission price.

Avon Ice Rink will also have special events happening throughout the season for families, including a PJ Masks meet and greet (Dec. 9), Paw Patrol meet and greet (Dec. 15) and a Noon Year’s Eve party (Dec. 31), which will allow young kids to ring in the new year without breaking their bedtime.

If you’re looking for some skating (and bumping) fun in Hendricks County, Avon Ice Rink is a cool place to be!
