Indianapolis is a great city for families, offering a mix of fun, adventure, and a little bit of learning along the way. If you’re looking to spend an unforgettable day downtown with the kids, you’re in luck! From museums to outdoor fun, there’s something for everyone. Here’s how you can make the most of your day in Indy with the whole family.
1. Kickstart the Day with Breakfast
Start your day off right with a tasty and wholesome breakfast. Head over to Mass Ave and try out The Garden Table, known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Or drive over to Milktooth in Fountain Square, where the Dutch Pancake comes out as big as your head. Our favorite is a stop at Café Patachou. Although everything on their menu is to die for, we recommend the cinnamon toast!
2. Explore the Indianapolis Children’s Museum
After breakfast, head over to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, one of the best children’s museums in the country. It’s packed with hands-on exhibits and interactive displays that kids of all ages will love. From dinosaurs to space exploration, there’s so much to explore here. Be sure to check out the Dinosphere (where you can get up close to a real dinosaur skeleton!) and the ScienceWorks exhibit where the kids can try their hand at fun science experiments. It’s a place where learning is a blast!
3. Discover History and Fun at the Indiana State Museum
Not too far from the Children’s Museum is the Indiana State Museum, where history, art, and science all come together. Kids will love the interactive exhibits that let them touch real fossils, explore ancient artifacts, and even step into a giant dinosaur model. It’s a great way for kids to engage with Indiana’s past in a hands-on way, and they might just leave with a few fun facts to share later!
4. Lunch by the Canal Walk
For lunch, head over to the Canal Walk, where you’ll find a range of family-friendly restaurants. After eating, take a little stroll along the water. Kids can enjoy watching the ducks, playing on the Colts PlaySpace, exploring the fountains, or even renting paddle boats if you’re feeling adventurous. The open space is perfect for letting off some energy before heading to your next stop.
5. Fun Outdoors at White River State Park
After lunch, head to White River State Park for some outdoor fun. There’s so much to do here! You can rent bikes to explore the park or hop on a paddleboat to cruise along the water. During the warmer months, the Splash Pad is a hit with younger kids, and it’s a great way to cool off. Plus, there are loads of fun attractions nearby, like the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, or the Indianapolis Zoo, where you can meet over 3,800 animals, including dolphins, penguins, and more. Want something a little more laid back? Head over to Victory Field, home of the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians (Bonus: Kids Eat Free on Sundays).

6. Visit the Soldiers and Sailors Monument
Next, make your way to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. This towering landmark in the middle of Monument Circle is perfect for taking in some incredible views of downtown Indy. Head up to the observation deck for a 360-degree view of the city (and don’t forget to snap a family photo). The kids will enjoy learning a bit about the monument’s history while you admire the sights. You can also wander around the circle and check out the fountains and statues that surround it. Fun Fact: Indianapolis has the second most war memorials in the United States, only second to Washington D.C.!
7. A Bit of Culture at Newfields
If you still have energy and are in the mood for more culture, head over to Newfields. The art museum offers a variety of exhibits that will capture the attention of both adults and kids. The outdoor gardens and 360-degree landscape are perfect for letting the little ones run around and explore. The museum also hosts family-friendly programs, like hands-on art workshops, so check out the schedule before you go.
8. Family Dinner at St. Elmo Steak House
After all the exploring, it’s time to refuel with a hearty dinner at St. Elmo Steak House, a legendary spot in Indianapolis. Known for its amazing steaks and famous shrimp cocktail, this iconic restaurant makes for a great meal. While it’s a more upscale dining option, the atmosphere is welcoming to all ages, and there are plenty of classic American dishes on the menu for the kids to enjoy. It’s the perfect place to relax after a full day of adventure.
9. Catch a Show at the Indiana Repertory Theatre
If the kids still have some energy left, wrap up your day with a show at the Indiana Repertory Theatre. This downtown theater often features family-friendly performances, from adaptations of classic children’s books to original productions. It’s a fun way to end the day on a creative note, and your little ones are sure to love it.
Spending a day in downtown Indianapolis with kids offers the perfect mix of education, adventure, and family fun. From exploring the Children’s Museum to enjoying the great outdoors at White River State Park and finishing off with a delicious dinner, there’s something for every age and interest. Whether you’re a local or visiting, a day in Indy is sure to leave you with plenty of happy memories.
