Q&A with Carmel Swim Academy
What makes Carmel Swim Academy unique?
Carmel Swim Academy firmly believes that everyone deserves to carry the life-saving skill of knowing how to swim. Our promise is to provide the highest-quality swim instruction from professional and friendly staff, making our community safer with each person who learns to swim. CSA is our community’s welcoming facility designed with your family in mind, offering exceptional programming for all ages and all abilities. With safety as our top priority, families can trust that children are safe while they have fun and grow their confidence in the water. Grounded in Carmel Swim Club’s fifty years of experience and excellence in the pool, Carmel Swim Academy is unparalleled in our swim lesson offerings. Swimming is for everyone and everyone belongs at CSA.
What activities are offered at Carmel Swim Academy?
Carmel Swim Academy offers swim lessons for children ages six months to 14 years old (plus additional programs for teens, ages 15 and older!).
Swimmers ages six months-three years old are enrolled in our caregiver/child classes. Accompanied by a parent, guardian, or caregiver, swimmers learn to be comfortable in the water. Infants and toddlers develop swim readiness skills through fun, confidence-building experiences, while adults learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision. Classes are 30 minutes long, and there is one instructor for six pairs of caregivers/children.
Swimmers ages three through 14 are eligible for CSA’s group swim lesson program. Swimmers are grouped based on both their age and skill level. Swimmers ages three to seven participate in 35-minute classes. Swimmers ages eight and older participate in 45-minute classes.
Families can choose to participate in our traditional sessions, where swimmers attend classes once a week (or more frequently, if a family desires) for four to five weeks. During the summer, we offer special “Summer Jam” sessions, where swimmers attend daily for five days.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
Swimmers in our caregiver/child classes have a 6:1 pair-to-instructor ratio.
Swimmers in our group swim lessons have a 3:1 swimmer-to-instructor ratio for swimmers ages three to seven; 4:1 swimmer-to-instructor ratio for swimmers ages eight to 14 in introductory levels; and a 6:1 swimmer-to-instructor ratio for swimmers ages eight to 14 in intermediate and advanced levels.
How much time do the campers spend outside?
N/A: Carmel Swim Academy is a warm-water, indoor pool. Specifically built with swim lessons in mind, the water is shallow and the facility is welcoming to swimmers of all ages and abilities. Our indoor facility means that weather events have minimal impact on programming.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
Lessons are offered in 30, 35, or 45-minute classes depending on your swimmer’s age. Lessons are offered Monday through Fridays between 9 AM and 12 PM and 3:30 PM and 8 PM and on Saturdays between 9 AM and 12:30 PM.
How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
Swim Instructors are at least 15 years old. All CSA instructors undergo a month of training — learning alongside and then co-teaching with a more experienced instructor. During programming, lifeguards are also on duty, and senior staff supervises the lesson activity.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
Carmel Swim Academy is delighted to teach swimmers of all ages and abilities. We ask that parents work with us to share what would be most helpful for their swimmer. CSA’s commitment to safety is unwavering. If the ratio for the age group of a child with special needs in group lessons would prohibit your child from receiving the level of care and attention they need, we would recommend swimmers with special needs work within our private lesson program.
What are your rates/fees like?
Tuition for CSA programs is based only on the number of classes delivered within your family’s selected session. There is no special enrollment or membership fee. Makeup classes are offered. Enrollment is not continuous, but aligns to your family’s dynamic scheduling needs. Carmel Swim Academy also offers free swim lessons to children experiencing financial need. Any child on free/reduced lunch, who is in a family on a county utility assistance program, or who receives a Medicaid waiver is eligible to participate in our best-in-class swim lessons at no cost.
