5 Ways to Get Outdoors this September

Oh, September – how we love you! The kids are firmly settled into the new school year, the temperatures are cooler and the leaves are just beginning their magnificent transformation. It is the perfect month to get out and about and enjoy all that Hamilton County and the surrounding area has to offer. Check out these 5 ways to get outdoors this September:

 

 

Hit a bike trail

A family bike ride is a great way to take From the Monon Trail to the many pathways at area parks to the mountain bike trails at Flat Fork Creek Park, there is a route for cyclists of all levels in Hamilton County. Click here to request an official trail map from Visit Hamilton County.

Don’t have a bike? No worries. Both Carmel and Westfield offer Bike Share programs through Zagster for just $3 per hour.

Take a trip to an apple orchard

September is synonymous with apples in Indiana. From Honeycrisp to Fuji, McIntosh to Golden Delicious, there are a number of orchards in and around Hamilton County, as well as several in the the greater Indianapolis area where you can grab your favorite variety. Whether you are looking to spend the day picking your own fruit or prefer to stock up on apples, local produce, cider and baked goods in the comfort of a market, there is a spot for everyone. Climb into the treetops

What better place to view the changing fall foliage that from within the tree tops. Treehouses at both the Treetop Outpost at Conner Prairie and Flat Fork Creek Park in Fishers offer great vantage points and hours of fun for kids (and their grown ups!). Those ages 8 and up who are looking for a bit more adventure, can head to Koteewi Aerial Adventure at Strawtown Koteewi Park in Noblesville. Here you can explore 60 challenging treetop trails and zip lines that provide thrills for everyone at every skill level.

Explore a new park or an old favorite

Parks aren’t just for summer. In fact, the cooler temps and colorful leaves make fall the perfect time to explore the many parks located throughout the area. Whether you are looking to let the kids burn off some energy at the playground, head out for a day hike or simply commune with nature, the parks systems in our county have something for everyone. Weekends in September are chock-full of a variety of festivals and outdoor celebrations that are perfect for enjoying the gorgeous fall weather.
