In the hills of eastern Kentucky, about two hours south of Cincinnati, families can paddle kayaks through a flooded limestone mine. The Gorge Underground turns a 100-year-old mine shaft into one of the more unusual road trip stops within driving distance of Indianapolis.
What It’s Actually Like
The standard experience is a guided, one-hour kayak tour through the flooded mine. Guides outfit everyone with helmets, headlamps and personal flotation devices before you launch into calm, still water. No wind, no waves, no current. Even first-time paddlers can handle it. That said, you’re still underground. It’s dark, it’s cool (a steady 52 degrees year-round) and layers are a good call no matter the season.

Which Tour Fits Your Family
The Classic Kayak Tour is open to ages 5 and up and caps group size at 12 people. In 2026, pricing starts at $65 Monday through Thursday and $70 Friday through Sunday for both adults and kids, with rates that can climb during holidays and peak weekends.
If your crew includes younger kids, look at the Classic Boat Tour instead. It’s open to ages 3 and up, lasts about 30 minutes and holds up to 20 people. You still get the underground setting without asking a preschooler to paddle for an hour.
Families who want something a little more atmospheric can book the Crystal Kayak Tour, which uses clear kayaks fitted with LED glow lights. That one runs 1.5 hours and starts at $75 weekdays or $85 weekends. A Crystal Clear SUP Tour is also available at the same price and duration for anyone who’d rather stand-up paddleboard.

Good to Know Before You Go
Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your tour for check-in and gear. The company strongly recommends booking in advance, especially during warmer months when tours fill quickly. On the cancellation side, refunds are not offered, but you can reschedule with timing restrictions and fees depending on how close you are to your tour date.
Children on any kayak tour need to be able to wear the provided helmet and PFD and sit still for the duration of the ride. Tandem kayaks are available on request when you arrive. Both kayak tours also have posted weight limits that vary by tour type and kayak style, so check the Gorge Underground website for current details before you book.
The attraction is open year-round, which makes it a solid option for spring break, a summer road trip or even a cozy off-season weekend getaway.

Make a Weekend of It
If you’re driving from Indianapolis, The Gorge Underground makes the most sense as part of a longer Red River Gorge getaway. The area is known for its hiking trails, scenic overlooks and striking rock formations, so it’s easy to pair the underground tour with time outdoors. Families who want to stretch the trip can look into other nearby activities such as ziplining, off-road tours and mini golf. There are also plenty of cabin rentals, inns and campgrounds in the area if you’d rather not fit the drive and tour all into one day.
