Indianapolis Children’s Choir: It Starts with Song

With over 40 years of experience helping kids shine on stage and off, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir (ICC) welcomes nearly 2,500 singers to its choirs, camps, and classes each year. Singers meet in locations across central Indiana and beginners are more than welcome, making life-changing song with the ICC more accessible than ever.

Never Too Small to Shine

Kids can begin their musical journey with the ICC as young as 18 months old in Music At Play classes designed for little learners. Choirs grow from there, with options for young people all the way through high school. Singers in kindergarten and up participate in the ICC’s concert season that presents high-quality public performances at venues across the city, with advanced choirs even having the opportunity to tour domestically and internationally.

But singers aren’t expected to be prodigies! A simple vocal assessment is all that’s needed for kids in 4th grade and up to join to ensure that they are placed in an ensemble that matches their skill level. Younger singers can simply have their families sign them up for the choir and location that meets their schedule and needs.

“We pride ourselves on meeting children where they are and helping them find their way to a lifelong love of music. Your child’s voice matters here, and so does who they are becoming,” explains Joshua Pedde, Executive Artistic Director of the ICC.

Hitting New High Notes

As the applause fades, what singers have learned doesn’t. Studies show that kids involved in music activities like choir have improved emotional intelligence, academic performance, and self-esteem. Weekly rehearsals help singers sharpen their musical skills with knowledge from experienced directors while gaining friendships, confidence, and much more along the way.

Expressing and becoming yourself, while connecting with others as a part of a team and creating artistry, comes together to create what singers go forth into the world with and who they ultimately become.

“ICC at its core is a place of support, supporting its singers in their singing careers and in their own lives. ICC has helped me grow not only as a singer, but also as a person,” shared Sam, who is now an ICC alum.

While most ICC choirs begin rehearsals in early August, new singers can join in at any time. The ICC prides itself in offering some of the lowest children’s choir tuition rates in the country, with additional financial assistance available if needed for families.
