Former Ferrari lead engineer Rob Smedley has launched FAT Karting League, a new karting program designed to democratise the F1 ladder. And guess what? It’s coming to Indiana!

This is racing without barriers—no expensive karts to buy, no massive upfront investment, just pure talent and competition. Whether your kid is a first-timer or a future F1 prospect, FKL gives any child between the ages of 5-17 the chance to get on track, develop real skills and compete—without breaking the bank.
And for those with serious potential? There’s an actual path forward—straight to a fully funded Formula 4 seat.
No Equipment, No Barriers—Just Racing
For decades, junior motorsport has had an unspoken rule: talent alone isn’t enough. If you wanted to race at a high level, you had to be prepared to spend. A lot.
Even at the entry level, parents were looking at $250,000 per season, not including maintenance, upgrades, mechanics and travel. It wasn’t just expensive, it was impossible for most families.
FKL is flipping that system upside down:
- No need to buy a kart or gear, FKL provides everything: the kart, race suit, helmet and gloves.
- No expensive custom build or engine upgrades. Every driver gets equal equipment and there are no unfair advantages
- 96% of traditional karting costs have been taken out. You can race in an FKL 9 race championship for as little as $4,000 for the whole season.
Where Every Racer Starts: Try-Out Sessions
If you’re wondering how to get your kid involved, the answer is simple: a Try-Out Session. FKL have sessions in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio over the course of a four week period.
Every driver, no matter their experience, starts here. It’s a half a-day event where kids get behind the wheel of an F1-engineered kart, get professional coaching, and start to learn what real racing feels like.
For some, it’ll be their first time on a track. For others, it’ll be a chance to level up their skills. Either way, by the end of the day, they’ll be faster, more confident, and probably already asking when they can come back.
If they love it (and most do), they can move into FKL’s training and competition programs—racing at top tracks across the Midwest and working toward bigger goals.
And for the kids who show real potential? There’s a clear path forward—one that leads all the way to professional motorsport.
Through FKL’s Ready to Race program, drivers get structured coaching, build their skills, and develop their racecraft. Our coaches will match each driver with a Championship, either the Regional or Pro.
The winner of the Regional Championship—along with selected top drivers from the Pro Championship—earns the chance to race against the best young talent from the U.K. in the World Final.
This isn’t just another race. It’s where the best of both nations go head-to-head, proving who’s got the raw speed and racecraft to go further. And for the standout driver? There’s something that could change their entire future: a fully funded Formula 4 seat.
This is where motorsport careers begin. And for the first time, they’re starting right here in the Midwest.
Parents Are Seeing the Difference
When FAT Karting League launched in the UK, parents didn’t know what to expect. But as soon as their kids got on track, it became clear: this was something different.
🗣️ “Throughout the day, we watched our initially very shy and nervous 9-year-old gain confidence. By the end? He couldn’t stop smiling and already wanted to race again.” – Liam, Parent
🗣️ “What a superb setup. This is everything a young racer needs—the equipment, the staff, the coaches. It was an incredible experience.” – Toby, Parent
🗣️ “The karts are fast, reliable, and the racing is insanely fun. Can’t wait for the next one.” – Dan & Stu, Drivers
Try It for Yourself: Midwest Try-Outs Start This Spring
If your kid has ever dreamed of racing—really racing—this is where they start.
FAT Karting League’s first-ever U.S. Try-Out Sessions kick off in April 2025, with events across the Midwest.
These sessions are filling up fast. Once they’re full, they’re full. And once your kid sees what it’s like to be on track, you might wish you had signed them up sooner.
Because once they take that first lap, everything changes.
They’re not just watching races anymore. They’re in one.
And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, this is where their journey to the big leagues begins.
