Our Experience at the Holliday Park Ice Rink

We like this rink for beginners and younger kids. It is not too big and has never felt overly crowded on our visits. The skate helpers were a hit with our toddler, and our big kids loved pushing their little brother around the ice. The music is fun, the lighting is nice at night, and skate rental is quick. Staff were knowledgeable and even sharpened my 10-year-old skates on site.

For non-skating parents, there is plenty of seating, several fire pits, and a small heated trailer to warm up between sessions. Because it is outdoors, we plan for the weather. Hats and gloves help a lot, and snow pants can be smart for little ones who spend part of the time on their knees.

Parent tip: Check the daily session schedule and try to arrive right after a Zamboni resurface so kids get the smoothest ice and the most useful skating time.

Hours and Session Structure at the Ice Rink at Holliday Park

The rink runs on timed sessions that vary by date. You choose a block and skate during that window. This keeps crowds reasonable and makes it easier to plan around naps, dinner, or bedtime. Evening sessions can feel more energetic with older kids and teens. Weekday daytime blocks are usually calmer.

Food, Warm-Ups, and Nearby Amenities

Expect a concession area on site with food and drink from MashCraft Brewing, plus fire pits around the rink for quick warm-ups. The brand new redesigned Holliday Park playground is now open, so plan extra time to let kids play before or after your session. For an indoor break, the Holliday Park Nature Center is a warm and educational stop. The small heated trailer is handy on windy days.

Free Learn to Play Hockey at Holliday Park

If your kids are even a little hockey curious, Holliday Park’s free Learn to Play Hockey is an easy yes. Our Hockey House runs it and feels welcoming from the moment you step on the ice. Sign-ups go fast, so register as soon as they open.

The class is aimed at ages five and up and works best if your child can already stand and shuffle or glide on skates. No fancy stops or backward skating required. Helmets and gloves are required. A bike helmet and winter gloves work fine. The rink provides sticks and pucks, which keeps things simple.

Sessions usually start with a short warm-up and safety reminders. Coaches then break the group into smaller pods by ability. That helped a lot for us. Newer skaters were not overwhelmed, and the more confident ones stayed engaged. Kids rotate through a few skills like moving with the puck, basic stick handling, and easy passes. They finish with a quick, just for fun mini game. The mini game was the highlight for our boys. They left sweaty, happy, and asking when we could come back.

A few parent notes from experience: register early because free spots disappear quickly, plan to arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to sort out skates and gear without rushing, and dress for the weather since it is an outdoor rink. Snow pants add a little cushion for tumbles. We also check the rink calendar the morning of class in case weather changes the schedule.

RSVP now to join the interest list for Our Hockey House’s free hockey lesson. RSVP does not reserve a spot; capacity is limited. Registration instructions will be emailed in January. RSVP here.
