Disney’s The Lion King Comes to Indianapolis
Based on Disney’s animated film, The Lion King has become one of the best-known stage productions in Broadway history. The musical opened on Broadway in 1997 and is now the third-longest-running show on Broadway.
The show is known for its puppetry, masks, choreography and music, including songs by Elton John and Tim Rice. Julie Taymor directs the production and helped design the show’s masks and puppets. Garth Fagan choreographs the musical.

What Families Will See
Families who know the movie will recognize Simba’s story, but the stage version is its own thing. Animals move through the theater and across the stage through puppetry, masks, costumes and choreography, with a lot of the storytelling happening visually.
That’s part of the appeal for families. Kids may come in for the familiar characters, while adults may leave talking about the stagecraft. It’s also a long show, so families with younger children should know the production runs about 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one intermission.
