The Lion King

Disney’s The Lion King is returning to Indianapolis this fall, bringing Simba, Nala, Mufasa and one very familiar opening number back to the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre. The Broadway in Indianapolis engagement runs Sept. 30 through Oct. 18, 2026, at Old National Centre in downtown Indianapolis. The musical opened on Broadway in 1997 and is now the third-longest-running show on Broadway. The show is known for its puppetry, masks, choreography and music, including songs by Elton John and Tim Rice. Julie Taymor directs the production and helped design the show’s masks and puppets. Garth Fagan choreographs the musical. Animals move through the theater and across the stage through puppetry, masks, costumes and choreography, with a lot of the storytelling happening visually. That’s part of the appeal for families. Kids may come in for the familiar characters, while adults may leave talking about the stagecraft. It’s also a long show, so families with younger children should know the production runs about 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one intermission.
