What makes Fishers Parks unique?
At Fishers Parks, we work hard to offer a camp program that sets us apart from others in Central Indiana. The City of Fishers is fortunate to have 25 beautiful parks properties that offer something for everyone, and our summer camp program is no different. These parks and facility locations serve as the home base and backdrop to a majority of our camps. The Fishers Parks staff is made up of educators, event managers, nature and STEAM enthusiasts, and so much more, and the collaboration of that team helps Fishers Parks annually offer a diverse set of camps, with themes in nature, art, messy and creative play, tech and STEAM, physical fitness, and more!
What activities are offered at Fishers Parks?
While we love educating kids about the natural world around us, Fishers Parks’ camps go beyond what a traditional parks and recreation department offers with a heavy focus in STEM and art. For camps based outdoors and in Fishers Parks, parents can expect their kids to bring home unique art projects, take part in fun and exciting science experiments, play new games with new friends, learn about wildlife in our area, and become closer with the great outdoors! Depending on which camps are chosen, some are more nature focused, and others are grounded in arts and culture, games, tech, creating at our makerspace, or life on our farm. We’re excited to further diversify our camp options in 2024 through brand-new camps in junior lifeguarding and robotics.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
Half-day camps in our parks have approximately 1 counselor for ever 5 campers per location (approximately 10 counselors per location plus a head/lead counselor). Full-day camps at elementary school locations will have 1 counselor for every 3-5 kids per location (approximately 10-15 counselors per location plus head/lead counselors.
How much time do the campers spend outside?
A lot! Because most of our camps are held in our parks, we strive to utilize the beautiful, outdoor space we have. Of course, weather can be tricky sometimes, and if weather becomes inclement, campers will move to the respective park building to continue to the day’s fun with crafts, STEAM projects, games, etc. Camps at our Maker Playground facility are mostly indoor in our Maker Labs, Think Tank, and Makerspace.
Does the camp provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
All campers will need to bring a shelf-stable lunch (lunchbox with ice pack) to camp each day, along with a morning snack, afternoon snack, and water bottle.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
Half-day options (8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) are available at four Fishers Parks properties (Holland Park, Billericay Park, Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve, Fishers AgriPark). Our full-day camp options (times vary between camps) are held at Hoosier Road Elementary, Brooks School Elementary, Maker Playground, and Geist Waterfront Park. All camp weeks run Monday through Friday, with exceptions for holidays (Juneteenth, July 4 & 5). All camps have built-in breaks for lunch, snacks, restroom use, etc.
How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
All camp counselors are at least 16 or older, and all head counselors are at least 18 or older. Each counselor is required to be CPR and First-Aid certified. All counselors undergo a criminal background check and also are required to go through a variety of online courses for child protection.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
Historically, Fishers Parks has always been able to provide accommodations for campers with special needs on a case-by-case basis, including meeting with parents or guardians to create a plan for inclusion for all to our camps, having 1:1 aids or nurses join the camper for the entirety of the camp week, and providing translators when needed. We welcome all abilities.
