St. Gianna’s Families Offers Childcare Help for Working Moms

Childcare makes a workday possible, but paying for it can stretch a family’s budget. For working mothers facing a temporary financial hardship, St. Gianna’s Families offers short-term childcare sponsorships designed to help them stay employed and keep their children in consistent care.

The Indiana nonprofit is accepting applications for its fall cycle through November 1, 2026. Its standard sponsorship provides $2,000 toward childcare costs, with funds paid directly to a licensed childcare provider.

Temporary help with a big household expense

St. Gianna’s Families focuses on families whose financial circumstances put their childcare arrangements at risk. The organization estimates that a standard sponsorship covers approximately six weeks of childcare, although the time covered depends on the provider’s rates. That support is intended to give parents room to work through a difficult period while continuing their jobs, education or career goals.

Recipients must currently be employed and use a licensed childcare provider. The sponsorship committee considers the family’s overall situation, including financial hardship, childcare costs, employment, educational goals and the difference temporary assistance could make. Its review looks beyond income thresholds alone.

Founded by a mother who understands

Founder Betsy Phillips launched St. Gianna’s Families in 2025, drawing on her experience as a single mother of twins and a longtime banking professional. She understood the strain of balancing a full-time career with childcare expenses, and wanted to help other mothers facing those same pressures.

The organization sponsored three families during its inaugural year. For LeTyrah, a 2025 sponsorship recipient whose story appears on the nonprofit’s website, the assistance brought both practical help and relief: “This grant means stability, relief, and an opportunity to keep moving forward.”

At the heart of St. Gianna’s Families is the belief that when one mother thrives, she lifts others with her. Phillips hopes the mothers who receive support will give back when they are able, helping the circle of support grow. Community members can also donate to support future childcare sponsorships.

How to apply or nominate a mother

Mothers can apply directly, and nominations can come from an employer, childcare provider, friend, relative, coworker or community member. Applying is free and confidential. St. Gianna’s Families offers spring and fall application cycles; this fall’s window runs September 1–November 1, 2026.
