Spring Mill State Park in southern Indiana is a nature lover’s and history buff’s dream and one of our favorite Indiana State Park to visit with kids. It’s a unique blend of outdoor adventures and cultural experiences, perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Plus, it’s just a quick 1.5-hour drive from Indianapolis. Entrance fees are budget-friendly, too—just $7 for in-state vehicles and $9 for out-of-state vehicles.
Step Directly into the 1800s at the Pioneer Village
The heart and soul of Spring Mill is its incredible Pioneer Village. This isn’t a stuffy museum behind glass; it’s a living, breathing community of 20 historic buildings that transports your family back to the 1830s. As you wander the dirt paths, you’ll see the massive water-powered wheel of the Grist Mill turning, hear the clang of the blacksmith’s hammer, and smell woodsmoke drifting from cabin chimneys.

What makes it truly special for kids are the heritage interpreters. Dressed in period clothing, these friendly guides are passionate about showing, not just telling. Your children can watch a weaver work a loom. They can also see how candles are traditionally made. They’ll learn what life was like before electricity and Wi-Fi. It’s a history lesson that feels like an adventure.
Good to Know: The Pioneer Village is open daily from May through mid-October, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The paths are mostly gravel and can be uneven, so while a rugged stroller can manage, a baby carrier might be easier for the littlest visitors. Plan to spend at least two to three hours here to truly soak it all in.
(Note: The historic Grist Mill is currently undergoing a major restoration to preserve it for future generations. While this means it may be partially or fully closed during your visit, you can check the DNR website for the latest updates on this important project.)

The Caves at Spring Mill State Park
Spring Mill is famous for its karst landscape, which means one thing kids love: caves! The park offers a few different ways to experience this underground world.
- Twin Caves Boat Tour: This is the must-do activity for most families. You’ll board a small boat for a 20-minute guided tour into the earth. The flat-bottom boat glides through the darkness, illuminated by the guide’s light, revealing unique cave formations. The best part? You’ll get to search for the park’s most famous residents: the Northern Blind Cavefish, an endangered species that only lives in this unique environment.
- Donaldson Cave: Want to peek into a cave on your own? A short, rugged hike on Trail 3 leads to the impressive mouth of Donaldson Cave, where you can see a stream flowing directly out of the hillside.
Parent Tip: The caves remain a constant, chilly 54 degrees year-round. Even on a hot summer day, pack a sweatshirt or light jacket for everyone. The boat tour is gentle and not overly scary, but it is dark, so it’s a good opportunity to hold little hands tight. Tours cost $3 per person and run on weekends from August through mid-October.
The Lakeview Activity Center
For a break from the sun or a rainy-day rescue, head to the park’s Nature Center. Renamed the Lakeview Activity Center, it’s a fantastic home base for learning about the local ecosystem. Inside, you’ll find engaging, interactive exhibits about the park’s geology and wildlife. Kids will love getting a safe, up-close look at live snakes and turtles. There’s also a dedicated children’s area with a puppet stage, puzzles, and coloring sheets—perfect for recharging before your next adventure.

Honor a Hoosier Hero: The Grissom Memorial
Ignite your child’s interest in space exploration with a stop at the Grissom Memorial, located right near the park entrance. This museum honors the incredible life of Virgil “Gus” Grissom, a Mitchell native, one of the original seven Mercury astronauts, and the second American to fly in space. The highlight is seeing his actual Gemini 3 space capsule, the “Molly Brown,” along with his spacesuit and other artifacts. It’s an inspiring and free addition to your park visit.
