30 FREE things to do this Winter in Indianapolis

The temperature may be dropping, but that doesn’t mean you are destined to spend the next couple of months trapped in your house with nothing to do. There is still plenty of opportunity for fun to be had – both indoors and out. Oh and because everyone loves FREE (especially right after the holidays) all of the activities you find below are FREE.

  1. Go sledding on one of Indy’s favorite sledding hills. *
  2. Sit in a double-sided car at the Indiana State Police Museum.
  3. Let the kids run wild indoors at The Traders Point Christian Church’s “The Park.”
  4. Ride the escalators at Central Library in downtown Indy, then head to The Curve for a little green screen fun.
  5. Head to your favorite park and build a snowman.
  6. Enjoy a free program at one of our local libraries.
  7. Honor MLK Day with free admission at a local attraction.
  8. Visit the Ornithology Center at Eagle Creek Park. *While the Ornithology Center is free, there is a fee for parking
  9. Head south to the huge indoor climbing gym at The Commons of Columbus, IN.
  10. Venture through Flat Fork Creek Park of Fishers. Start with the sledding hill – stay for the treehouses.
  11. Scout out the 35-foot Veal’s Ice Tree in person.
  12. Give back to your neighbors and help shovel the driveway after it snows.
  13. Farmer’s Markets aren’t just for the summer. Find some tasty treats at the Fishers Farmers Market, Carmel Farmers Market or Indy Winter Farmers Market at the Circle City Industrial Complex.
  14. Don your green at the Greening Of The Canal on 3/15, which includes family fun at the Indiana Historical Society, concerts and more.
  15. Speaking of green, head out for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Indy.
  16. Schedule a tour of the Indianapolis Humane Society.
  17. Burn some energy at Cornerstone Lutheran Church Indoor Playground.
  18. Head to the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indy. {Small fee to take the elevator but the stairs are free.}
  19. Snuggle up with a new book at Kids Ink Bookstore.
  20. Visit the interactive and fun Holliday Park Nature Center.
  21. Give back to the community and volunteer as a family.
  22. Go climb a tree at the The Treehouse at Plainfield Christian Church
  23. Go for storytime at your favorite bookstore or public library.
  24. Ride the monorail downtown – catch it at Methodist Hospital and ride the loop.
  25. Make snow angels in your backyard.
  26. Put your kids’ musical tastes to the test at the monthly Indy CD & Vinyl Kids Day on the last Sunday of the month. Includes a concert too!
  27. Check out some snakes and turtles at the Cool Creek Park Nature Center.
  28. Bundle up and enjoy a winter hike.
