Would you like me to bring out the kid’s meals first?

“Would you like us to bring out the kid’s meals first, or wait and bring them out with your meals?”

Every time we go out to eat as a family, we are asked this question. Every time we answer the same way, “All at the same time, please.” After the server walks away, my wife and I look at each other with the same puzzled look, thinking, why would we want our kids’ food served before ours?

Is there something we are missing by not having our kids’ meals served before ours?

There are a few possible reasons someone would want kid food served first, but these seem like pretty flimsy arguments…

-It has time to cool down (think cheese pizza) before the kid can eat it.

-Kid food cooks quicker, therefore should be served first.

-Kids may need help cutting food or eating, that would be easier to do before adult entrees arrived at the table.

-Maybe if kids take a long time to eat, they need that extra twenty minutes to finish their meal.

Like I said, weak arguments, at best.

It never made sense to us. Say you do get your child’s food first, what is he going to do after polishing off his chicken fingers and your plate is just arriving?

It makes as much sense as having a babysitter come to your house to watch your kids, while you’re still home, then leaving at the same time you do.

Can someone make some sense of the question that isn’t going away anytime soon, “Would you like us to bring out the kids’ meals first, or wait and bring them out with your meals?”

-Pete
