Frederick Douglass Playground is going to be a problem for me. Not because there is anything wrong with it, but because I have a feeling I am going to compare every new Indianapolis playground to this one for a while. Frederick Douglass Playground at Frederick Douglass Park in Indianapolis is a large, shaded, mostly fenced destination playground next to the Frederick Douglass Park Family Center in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. It has a towering main climbing structure, a smaller toddler version, sensory hills, swings, natural play elements, inclusive musical instruments and even outdoor workout equipment for adults. Ellie and I stopped by when we only had about 30 minutes to play. We stretched it to 40 minutes and still could have easily stayed another hour or two. That is usually the sign of a playground worth writing about. If you keep a mental list of things to do in Indianapolis with kids, move this one up. The Playground at Frederick Douglass Park The playground is what makes Frederick Douglass Park feel like a destination for families. This is not a simple big-kid side, little-kid side setup. It has layers, and each one gets real space. The Main Climbing Structure Is Big, Tall and Not Effortless The centerpiece is a giant modern play structure with two tall towers connected by a long, fully enclosed rope suspension bridge. From the ground, it looks impressive. From inside the rope bridge, it feels even bigger. This is not one of those playgrounds where a child walks up a few stairs, takes a slide and calls it a day. Kids need to climb. There are rope tunnels, netted climbing areas, vertical climbing elements, wobble-step style pieces and a layered rope interior that leads up through the towers. The large enclosed spiral tube slide is the payoff, but getting there takes some confidence. The rope bridge is high, long and fully netted, so it gives kids that adventurous feeling without feeling wide open. Ellie went right for it, which did not surprise me, and I was once again reminded that my children are braver on playground equipment than I am in most adult situations. I would put the main structure mostly in the 5 and up range, especially for kids who want to get all the way to the top. A confident preschooler may love parts of it, but younger kids may need help or may be happier sticking to the toddler zone, swings, hills and nature play area. It is not scary in a bad way. It is just a real climb. The Toddler Area Does Not Feel Like an Afterthought One thing Frederick Douglass Playground gets right is scale. The smaller play structure echoes the design of the large tower, so the younger-kid area feels like its own version of the main playground instead of a sad little side piece. It is better suited for kids around ages 2 to 5, with a smaller slide and easier climbing, and it gives younger children somewhere to play without competing with the older kids the big tower pulls in immediately. The Shade Is the Quiet Hero Here I have visited a lot of updated playgrounds around Central Indiana, and many of them have one thing in common: the equipment is great, but the shade is not. Frederick Douglass is different. Huge mature trees surround large portions of the playground, and there are shade sails in a few key spots too. That changes how long families can realistically stay, especially in the summer. Rubber surfacing can get hot, kids get sweaty fast and parents start making deals with themselves about how long is "enough" outside time. Here, the shade makes a longer visit feel possible. The Almost-Fenced Layout Makes a Difference During our visit, the playground felt almost entirely fenced in, with about three exit points. The fourth side uses the large pavilion and picnic table area as more of a physical barrier, so it feels mostly enclosed. For parents with younger kids, runners or multiple children going in different directions, fencing can change the entire stress level of a playground visit. Frederick Douglass still has openings to watch, but it feels much more contained than most large playgrounds. There are also benches and sidewalks around the play area, which makes it easier to move around without feeling like you are chasing your child through mulch, grass and regret. Do Not Skip the Nature Play Area Beside the modern playground is a natural play area with mulch, big logs, hollowed-out tree trunks and climbing pieces made from real wood. It would be easy for a nature play area to feel like an add-on next to a playground this shiny, but this one actually works. The logs give kids a totally different kind of challenge than the towers. They can climb, balance, crawl and make up their own rules. It also keeps the whole playground from feeling sterile: there is rubber surfacing, bright equipment and modern design, but there are still trees, logs, mulch and shade. Swings, Music and Sensory Movement Features The swing area includes four big-kid swings, one toddler bucket swing, two toddler-adult swings and an adaptive swing. The toddler-adult swings are always a nice find because they let a caregiver and young child swing together. There are also inclusive musical instruments near the natural play area, adding another accessible, low-pressure way to play. The rubber surfacing has raised hills, rounded mounds and half-spheres that kids can climb, balance on, run over or turn into their own obstacle course. This is the kind of detail that works especially well for sensory seekers and kids who like movement even when they are not technically "on" a piece of playground equipment. The honest note is that the main tower and rope bridge are very climbing-heavy and do not appear to be ramp-accessible. This is a playground with inclusive pieces and strong multi-age appeal, but the biggest feature is built for climbing. There Is Even Workout Equipment for Adults This might be the detail that pushed Frederick Douglass Playground from "very cool" to "wait, they really thought about this." There are eight outdoor workout machines for adults, including two with weights. The fitness equipment is close enough to the playground that it feels intentionally connected, not like a random exercise corner across the park. Parents could realistically use some of the machines while older kids play nearby. Toddlers have something to do, older kids have something to do and adults have something to do. That is rare. The Pavilion Makes This an Easy Longer Visit The pavilion next to the playground is large, shaded and close to the play area, with multiple picnic tables and trash cans, so families can bring lunch, meet friends or take snack breaks without leaving the playground area. There is a large parking lot nearby, and the Frederick Douglass Park Family Center is right beside the playground. Tennis courts sit behind one side of the play area, with basketball courts farther back. The whole park has the feeling of a community hub, not just a playground dropped into an open field. Related Article: The Best Playgrounds in Indianapolis Inside the Frederick Douglass Park Family Center The playground sits right next to the Frederick Douglass Park Family Center, which opened in May 2024 and is the largest center in the Indy Parks system. Inside, families will find two full-sized basketball courts, an indoor walking track that overlooks the gym, a large community room with a stage, dance and exercise spaces, a demonstration kitchen, a podcast and technology room, a food pantry and day camps. I did not go inside for a full tour during this playground visit, but it is worth knowing the center is right there. Bathrooms are available inside the family center, but outdoor restrooms were not obvious from the playground during our visit. That is one detail I would check before promising a child "one more slide" 17 times. More Things to Do at Frederick Douglass Park The playground is the main reason I would bring kids here, but it is not the only thing at Frederick Douglass Park. The park has a large community feel, with tennis courts near the playground, basketball courts nearby, green space and the Frederick Douglass Park Golf Course. You could come for the playground, check out the family center during open hours or build a longer visit around the larger park amenities. A Park With Real History Frederick Douglass Park opened in 1921 and was named after abolitionist Frederick Douglass. According to Indy Parks, the park sits on 80 acres in the Martindale-Brightwood community and was one of the first parks in the city to welcome Black residents, once known as the city's "black park." A swimming pool was added in 1927, and the Frederick Douglass Park Golf Course opened in 1928. That history matters. The new playground and family center are not just nice amenities. They are part of a larger investment in a park that has been important to the Martindale-Brightwood community for generations. Why Frederick Douglass Playground Stands Out If this playground were closer to our house, it would easily be one of our top three regular playgrounds. It has enough variety, shade and all-ages appeal that it feels less like a quick stop and more like a place you plan around. The cautions are pretty minor, but worth knowing. The biggest tower is best for confident climbers. The tall structures and tube slide create a few visibility gaps, so if you have a younger climber up top, you will be moving around to keep eyes on them. The nature play area has mulch instead of rubber surfacing. And while bathrooms are inside the family center, I did not see outdoor restrooms that were obvious from the playground. Still, this one is going on my short list. Frederick Douglass Playground is the kind of place that makes me wonder how future playground reviews are going to go, because I already know the question I will be asking: But how does it compare to Frederick Douglass?
