Guide to Swim Lessons in Indianapolis

Winter weather has arrived to Indiana, and no doubt the cabin fever will come in a few weeks too. Why not start the kids on summer {yes we said it: Summer!} pool prep with some winter swim lessons? There are plenty o’ places around the Indianapolis area that offer them, and we’ve compiled this quick guide to help kickoff your search. Rest assured if we discover more, we’ll get them added – in other words, if your favorite spot isn’t represented, let us know!

Here’s a list of locations offering winter swim lessons in the Indianapolis area:

 

Central
  • Butler University: Lessons allow for two to three individuals per instructor and scheduled on an individual basis with the instructor when the Aquatic Center is open. Location: Butler University Health & Recreation Complex, 530 W. 49th Street, Indianapolis. (317) 940-4472. 
  • IUPUI Natatorium: Designed for ages 6 months and up. Offer three different age groups for learn-to-swim classes: Infant, Preschool and Children. Classes help children learn to swim independently and teaches many life-saving skills. Coach to student ratio is 1:4. Location: IUPUI Campus, 901 West New York Street, downtown Indianapolis.   • The Riviera Club: Lessons available for children ages 1 and up either in parent-tot or private lesson setting. Location: 5640 N Illinois St, Indianapolis. (317) 255-5471.
  • Washington Township Swim Club: 2:1 ratio program. Each individual is evaluated for optimal instructor and peer ‘pairing,’ and then set a course for graduated progression from one level of swimming to the next. Location: North Central HS Natatorium, 1801 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis. North
  • Goldfish Swim School: Lessons available for ages 4 months and up on a once-weekly, twice-weekly or drop-in basis. Two Indianapolis locations available: 11581 Geist Pavilion Dr #114, Fishers or 271 Merchants Square Drive, A-110, Carmel. (317) 810-0790.
  • Stony Creek Swim Center: Offers swim lessons for children and adults of all ages and abilities at their indoor facility in Noblesville. Location: 15550 Stony Creek Way, Noblesville. (317) 773-7399.
  • Carmel Aquatics Center: Lessons available for children ages 3 and up {must be potty trained}, with multiple levels to progress to. Private lessons also available. Location: 520 E Main St, Carmel. (317) 575-8244.
  • Southeastern Swim Club: Swim lessons are offered for children ages 3 and older {must be potty-trained}. Program follows the ASCA Swim America curriculum, with 10 different levels of swim lessons offered during a session of classes. Location: 13910 E 126th St, Fishers. (317) 579-0164.
  • Carmel Clay Parks: Lessons are designed for anyone three years of age and older. All classes are intended to assist you or your child with learning new or fine-tuning your strokes. Classes include Preschool Levels, Learn to Swim Levels, homeschool, adaptive, and adult offerings, and more. Location: Monon Community Center, Carmel. (317) 848-7275.

South
  •  Indy Island at Raymond Park: A 1:6 ratio for swim lessons – children should be ready for stroke development and able to sit through a 45-minute program. Mommy and me classes also offered.  Location: 8575 E. Raymond St. Indianapolis. (317) 862-6876
  • Greenwood Gators: Lessons for skill or to transition to a competitive team. Classes begin with preschool level on up to advanced. Parent and child classes also offered. Location: Greenwood High School, 615 W Smith Valley Rd, Greenwood. Email [email protected] for more info.

East
  • Lawrence Learn To Swim: Held at the Lawrence North High School Natatorium, lessons run mid-September to July and registration is open year-round. Classes last 30 minutes and available for ages 3-16. Location: 7802 Hague Road, Indianapolis. (317) 529-1229.
West
  • Splash Island at Plainfield Recreation Center: From one-on-one to group sessions, Splash Island has a host of options for swimmers, no matter their level. Their current Winter schedule is limited to Parent and Tot classes but stay tuned for additional options in the Spring. Location: 651 Vestal Road, Plainfield. (317) 839-7665.
Multiple locations
  • YMCA: Multiple Indianapolis-area YMCA branches offer a wide range of classes, from toddler to adult and group to private. Locate the branch near you to inquire about times or start with the general YMCA Aquatics website.
  • Indy Parks: Again, lots of Indy Parks locations around town offer lessons designed for children 6-15 years and help them concentrate on becoming more comfortable in the water. Skills are age appropriate with a 1:4 ratio and will prepare the child for success in youth level classes. Call (317) 327-7390 to get started.
