Q&A with Summer U:
What makes Summer U unique?
Summer U is more than a camp—it’s an experience rooted in University High School’s six core values: Diversity, Commitment to Excellence, Personal Responsibility, Creativity, Stewardship, and Mutual Respect, Support, and Trust. These values guide everything we do, from the way we design our camps to how we engage with campers.
Our camps also stand out because of the expertise of our leaders. For example, our rocketry camp is led by actual rocket scientists, and our robotics camp by FIRST Robotics mentors, ensuring campers learn from passionate professionals. This unique combination of hands-on learning, expert instruction, and a values-driven approach creates an enriching and inclusive environment where campers thrive.

What activities are offered?
Our camps emphasize hands-on learning, with topics ranging from cultural and language exploration, creative writing, theatre, and film production to sports, game development, and engineering. We also offer specialized camps in rocketry, robotics, and Minecraft through Indy STEM Camps, ensuring a wide range of opportunities for curious learners.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
On average we have one adult for every eight campers.

How much time do the campers spend outside?
Outdoor time varies by camp. Some campers spend most of their time outside, while others are primarily indoors, taking breaks outside. The camp’s focus and activities determine where campers spend their time.
Does Summer U provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
Parents are asked to provide lunches and snacks that do not require refrigeration or heating. Water bottle fillers are available on campus, and vending machines offer snacks and drinks for purchase.

What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
Most camps run for three hours, starting at either 9 a.m. or 1 p.m., with breaks throughout the session. Campers attending both morning and afternoon sessions enjoy a supervised lunch and free time, either indoors or outdoors. Some camps, like sports camps, run longer, with schedules from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or even 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., keeping campers engaged in activities all day.

How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
The leadership at Summer U is carefully chosen to ensure the best experience for our campers. Core camps are led by experienced educators and supported by select University High School alumni, who bring energy and enthusiasm to the camps.
Specialized camps, such as sports and Minecraft, are staffed by trained counselors working under the supervision of seasoned educators, maintaining the high standards of quality and care that set Summer U apart.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
Our facilities are fully accessible, and we are happy to discuss specific needs to ensure every camper has a positive experience.
