Preschool Teacher Needed 2016 – 2017

The Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) Department at Butler University is searching for a qualified teacher for preschool children in the Butler Early Language & Literacy (BELL) Program for the academic year 2016 – 2017.

BELL is appropriate for children ages 3 – 5 years who have speech and language delays as well as for typically developing children. The purpose of BELL is to provide a language and literacy-rich learning environment so that these children enter Kindergarten positioned for success in learning to read. BELL provides a structured environment that focuses on communication and early literacy skills that are important for later academic success. BELL uses art, music, and animals to encourage verbal expression and provide enjoyment and interest for the children. Enrollment is limited to 10 – 12 children.

In addition to preparing preschool children for success in communication and early literacy, BELL also provides a valuable educational experience for CSD students.

Description of BELL Staff:

  • The BELL preschool Teacher manages the classroom and helps plan and implement the BELL program. Qualifications include a degree in early childhood education and experience and/or interest in working with young children who are not using communication skills as would be expected given their age.
  • CSD students assist the BELL teacher in various ways that include the following: help plan activities, provide verbal stimulation, teach language and early literacy concepts, give hand-over-hand help for projects, and redirect behavior when needed.
  • A certified speech-language pathologist (SLP) supervises the Butler CSD students who receive course credit from their work with the children in BELL. The SLP collaborates with the BELL teacher to plan and implement the BELL program and provides instruction for students in teaching language and literacy concepts.
