Makesmith Workshop at Conner Prairie

Conner Prairie is such a gem! The boys and I went in for a visit on Saturday. The last time I had been I was in grade school.  Needless to say that was a very long time ago. I have been missing out! For some reason I always thought of Conner Prairie as an outdoor spot. But I was wrong. They have so many fun indoor activities to explore as well.

We went to in to specifically check out the new Makesmith Workshop at Conner Prairie. It is their new indoor exhibit that just opened on January 11th. It offers a hands on experience that gets you back to the fundamentals of creating. The exhibit is permanent but the theme will change periodically. Right now it is the textiles workshop. You will have a chance to try out sewing and weaving.

The boys thought the exhibit was super cool. They got to practice hand stitching, use a sewing machine, and learned how to sew on a button. I love that the Makesmith Workshop at Conner Prairie taught my boys skills they can really put to use. They are already asking me to buy a sewing machine so they can continue the fun at home.

Starting in February the workshop will change to woodworking. We will definitely be back for that. Also, on the schedule is metal working, pottery, and more. The goal of the workshop is to teach basic handiwork skills that people need. Technology is great and we definitely need it in today’s world. But with the use of technology working with your hands has taken a back seat. Conner Prairie’s mission is to make sure those skills do not get lost.

I definitely recommend the Makesmith Workshop. We had the pleasure of working with two museum staff workers, Rachel and Logan. They were so patient and so great with the boys. They took their time and really strived to teach them skills that they could take with them. I really enjoyed the interaction. Go check out the textiles workshop! You will not be disappointed.
