Pumpkin patch season around Indianapolis runs from mid-September through early November, and not every farm works the same way. Some are quick stops for a pumpkin and a cider slush. Dates, hours and pumpkin availability can change during the season. Check the farm’s website or social media page before making the drive, especially if U-pick pumpkins are the main reason for the trip.

1. Anderson Orchard

Anderson Orchard in Mooresville is the stop for families who want to combine pumpkin shopping with apple season. The U-pick pumpkin patch opens the last week of September, U-pick apples run every day across nearly 30 varieties, and red raspberries and chestnuts fill in as the harvest allows. The orchard is open seven days a week in September and October.

The concession stand covers apple cider, cider slushies, caramel apples, fried apple pies, elephant ears and fried biscuits with apple butter. The Apple Festival & Craft Fair is Sept. 26–27 with more than 80 crafters, food trucks, live music from noon to 4 p.m., homemade apple cobbler, the straw pile and the pumpkin patch.

2. Beasley’s Orchard

Beasley’s Orchard in Danville turns pumpkin season into one of the larger fall farm days in the area. A hayride carries families out to the U-pick pumpkin patch, and the rest of the property fills in with a corn maze, apple cannons, the Barnyard Bonanza play area, a jumping pillow and straw mountain. U-pick apples run alongside the pumpkins through October.

The Heartland Apple Festival takes over the first two weekends of October, Oct. 3–4 and Oct. 10–11, adding puppet shows, balloon magic and face painting to the usual lineup. Festival admission is $16, with ages 2 and younger free. Those are the two busiest weekends of the season and the only Sundays the farm opens at 9 a.m. instead of noon.

3. Dull’s Tree Farm and Pumpkin Harvest

Dull’s Tree Farm and Pumpkin Harvest in Thorntown is firmly in the full-day category. Pumpkin Harvest runs on select dates from Sept. 26 through Nov. 1, and admission covers more than 45 attractions, including hayrides to the pumpkin patch, a giant corn maze, giant slides, a corn pit, a barrel train, farm animals and a trike track. Each ticket also includes one activity pass for an add-on such as air cannons, paintball, face painting or pumpkin decorating.

Apple cider donuts and a full lineup of fall food are on the grounds, fire pits can be rented and fireworks go up Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Pumpkins, pony rides, food and a handful of add-ons cost extra. The farm is open Saturdays and Sundays all season and adds Thursdays and Fridays starting Oct. 15, so check the calendar rather than assume it is open on a given weekday.

Hogan Farms in Brownsburg has a U-pick pumpkin patch with traditional carving pumpkins, specialty and white pumpkins, minis, pie pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn and fall decor, priced by size from $2 to $20. The corn maze, Kid Zone and weekend hayrides are ticketed separately, and a farmers market with local vendors sets up at the patch on select October weekends.

Unlike most farms on this list, Hogan Farms is pet-friendly. Dogs are welcome on a leash, corn maze included.

5. Kelsay Farms

Kelsay Farms in Whiteland runs its fall season Sept. 25 through Oct. 25, now in its 20th year. Families can work through a seven-acre corn maze, visit the baby barnyard, climb Bale Mountain, bounce on the jump pad, dig in the corn crib and ride the Moo Choo cow train. Flashlights come out in the maze after dark.

There is one important distinction for pumpkin hunters: Kelsay Farms does not have a pick-your-own pumpkin patch. Pumpkins and gourds are sold at the farm, but nobody is cutting one from the field. There is no hayride either. The cow train is the ride.

General admission is $14 for ages 2 and older, and children 23 months and younger are free. Pumpkins, concessions and Country Store purchases cost extra. Pets stay home, with one exception: the Howl at the Moon dog night on Oct. 2.

6. Piney Acres Farm

Piney Acres Farm in Fortville is open for fall Sept. 19 through Oct. 25 with hayrides, a corn maze, a one-acre kids’ maze, barnyard animals, a jump pad, gem mining, pig races, pedal karts and a dual 150-foot tube slide for riders at least 42 inches tall, plus a large play area that runs from a ninja course to a giant rocking chair. Piney Pete’s Whistle Stop handles snacks.

One thing to know before planning a pick-your-own trip: the pumpkin field is off-site because the farm rotates fields for crop health, so nobody walks out to cut a pumpkin. Staff harvest a range of traditional and specialty pumpkins, gourds and squash and bring them back to the farm to choose from. Families who only want pumpkins do not need to buy admission. All-access admission is $20 for kids and $18 for adults, with a $10 general admission option for adults who are skipping the activities. Tots are $5 and infants are free. Admission is half price on select Mondays through Thursdays through Oct. 1.

7. Pleasant View Orchard

Pleasant View Orchard in Fairland pairs U-pick apples with a pick-your-own pumpkin patch and not much in the way of ticketed attractions, which is the appeal. The patch usually opens around the last weekend of September and is then open every day. On weekends a tractor-pulled wagon runs continuously to and from the pumpkin field. On weekdays it is a walk.

The rest is orchard basics: a country store, a concession stand with the usual orchard treats and a playground. The orchard is pet-friendly, with leashed dogs welcome everywhere but the store and the pumpkin wagon.

Russell Farms Pumpkin Patch in Noblesville opens Sept. 26 and runs on select dates through Oct. 31. One admission price covers unlimited activities, including hay wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, two corn mazes, farm animals and the rest of the farm’s fall attractions. Pumpkins and the paint-a-pumpkin craft are the only add-ons.

For families who really do just need a pumpkin, there is no admission charge to shop already-picked pumpkins, straw, fall decorations or the Country Store. Pets are not allowed past the front gate, purse-sized or otherwise.

Smith Family Farms in Pendleton opens its pumpkin patch every Saturday and Sunday in October and keeps things simple. Admission is $6 and includes the playground, a petting zoo with donkeys, cows, goats and rabbits, hayrides and a corn maze. Food runs to fresh-cooked burgers, nachos and caramel apples.

Pumpkins and gourds are sold separately, with regular sizes running $3 to $10 and mini pumpkins and gourds at $1. Mums are $9, and straw bales, corn shocks and Indian corn are $5 each for anyone whose front porch needs considerably more fall than one pumpkin can provide.

10. Spencer Farm

Spencer Farm in Noblesville is more working farm than ticketed fall festival, which suits families who mostly want the produce. The farm raises its own pumpkins in a range of sizes and stocks gourds, Indian corn, corn stalks and straw bales, and September and October bring dig-your-own mums from the field (shovel provided, muscle not).

Spencer Farm does not post a fixed pumpkin opening date, so check the Today at Spencer Farm page on its website before a pumpkin-specific trip. The entrance to the U-pick fields closes at 5:30 p.m.

11. Tuttle Orchards

Tuttle Orchards in Greenfield opens its pumpkin patch Sept. 18 through Oct. 31. The patch covers 20 acres with different varieties, shapes and sizes to pick, and there is no charge to walk into the field. You pay for what you pick: large carving pumpkins are $10 at any size, decorative squash like Cinderella pumpkins are $12, pie pumpkins are $5 and minis are $2. Little red wagons are provided for the haul back.

Tuttle’s is also where a pumpkin trip can expand into a bigger fall outing. The FarmYard has more than 30 activities, including narrated wagon rides, a three-acre corn maze, a giant corn crib and a giant slide. FarmYard admission is $10 for ages 2 and older and free for ages 1 and younger.

The farm is closed every Sunday, which matters if the weekend plan hinges on Sunday. Pets are not permitted.

Waterman’s Family Farm brings one of the larger fall festival setups inside the Indianapolis city limits. The Fall Festival opens Sept. 26 and runs on select dates through Nov. 1, with the pumpkin patch, hayrides, a corn maze, a petting zoo, rides and games, live entertainment and a pumpkin-eating dinosaur included with admission. Animal feed is $5 and the apple cannon starts at $4.95.

Pumpkins start at $5 and are purchased separately. Admission starts at $12.95 on opening weekend and on October weekdays and $17.95 on Saturdays and Sundays in October. Kids 2 and younger are free, and buying in advance locks in the price.

Hours vary by date, especially at the start and end of the season, so check the farm’s date-by-date calendar before heading over. The farm market keeps its own hours, separate from the festival.
