The Nature Academy at Cool Creek invites you to explore the wonders of the natural world! This series of engaging evenings combines social interaction, expert-led presentations, hands-on activities, and outdoor exploration.
Each event begins with social time and refreshments at 6:30 PM, followed by a presentation on a fascinating nature topic. Depending on the subject, participants may engage in hands-on activities like moth watching or seed collecting, or venture outdoors to observe and learn in nature.
March 13: Birds of Prey
Mark Booth from Take Flight! Wildlife Education will teach us about birds of prey, their life cycles, adaptations, unique features, and conservation. Mark will bring a few feathered friends for his presentation.
April 3: (Wile E.) Coyotes
Coyotes are an important part of Indiana’s ecology. DNR Biologist Geriann Albers will replace fear with facts and teach us how to coexist with these secretive canines. Road Runners are not included in this program.
May 1: Rendezvous at the Rookery
Let’s deep dive into the life history of the Great Blue Heron. We will learn about their nesting habitats (on display at the Rookery Preserve), conservation history, and other interesting facts! This program will be held off-site at the Rookery Preserve (25440 Scherer Ave, Acadia.) Please bring binoculars and spotting scopes. Some equipment will be available to share. This program starts at 7:00 pm with no preprogram social time.
June 5: Let’s Talk Turtles
Jim Horton, current President of the Hoosier Herpetological Society, will join us to discuss turtles and lizard’s native to Indiana. Jim’s presentation will cover habitat, life cycle, environmental issues, and more. Live turtles (and hopefully a few lizards) will be participating in this program.
