Get a taste of what’s coming this spring and summer on the Downtown Canal Walk. Downtown Indy, Inc. (DII), Downtown’s urban place-management organization charged with marketing and managing events along the Downtown Canal, announces the fourth annual Canal Awakens Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
This FREE event encourages attendees to get outside and explore many of the businesses, restaurants and attractions located along the 1.5-mile stretch of water.
Attendees are invited to pick up a Canal Awakens “passport” and map at the DII tent at the Walnut Street Basin (or any other marked passport location along the Canal) and then visit the businesses located along the waterway. Participating businesses include: Canal Square Apartments, Capture Fitness, Fresco, Indy Bikes & Boats, Indiana State Museum, Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indy’s Child and many more. Businesses will provide family-friendly activities and giveaways.
Those who visit all participating locations and return their passport to the any of the participating businesses will be entered to win giveaways including an Invoke Studio prize package, free Indy Bikes & Boats rentals, two entries for the Indy Ultimate, free month at the Gym at 9 on Canal, Pacers swag and other Canal goodies.
New this year is the Colts Canal Playspace, Downtown’s only playground, which is near the Walnut Street basin and just opened last October. The Playspace features a vertical climbing tower and ladder, a spinner bowl, twister nets and stepping stones and is open from dusk to dawn.
“We’re excited to bring this terrific event back for a fourth year,” said Courtney Howell, DII’s director of events. “Canal Awakens highlights the great attractions and restaurants along our unique urban waterway. It’s the perfect family-friendly event to take in the picturesque views of our Downtown.”
This event is free to attend and is family (and pet!) friendly.
The Canal Walk, a 3-mile loop, is a popular urban respite for fitness enthusiasts and serenity-seekers alike. The City of Indianapolis has engaged Downtown Indy, Inc. to manage and market events along the Canal Walk. Downtown Indy, Inc. works to enhance the vitality of adjacent properties and attract and host major special events and gatherings.
