Approaching “The Hill,” turning 40 and taking care of myself

A conversation with myself…

“How am I almost 40? Didn’t I just graduate high school?”

“Dude, that was over 20 years ago. Look at the Facebook pictures of your friends from back then. Do they look like teenagers? Look at yourself. Do you look like a teenager?”

“But, seriously 40? Aren’t my kids just little babies?”

“No. Your oldest is almost 10. Ever so closer to middle school. Beef up the college fund my friend, it’ll be here before you know it. And your youngest, the baby? She starts kindergarten in the fall.”

Midlife crisis, a freakout, or being over the hill, regardless of what you call it, I’m trying to take a little better care of myself these days. As you all know, it is not easy. Making the daily choice to exercise is hard. Most days I can think of a dozen things I’d rather do than pick up a set of weights: browse the internet, mindlessly watch sports on tv, or take a nap, just to name a few. Heck, most days I’d rather do laundry than workout. But, lately, I’ve made it a priority.

Eating right isn’t so easy either. It seems like everything tastes better when it’s fried or made of chocolate (and now I’m hungry for fried chocolate). And the most convenient things to eat are always the worst for you. Again though, recently I’ve been making an effort to take care of myself, not only for me, but for my family as well.

ANOTHER FUN PETE POST: What really goes on at a kindergarten graduation?

There is one EASY thing I’ve started doing in an effort to take better care of myself, and that is taking a multivitamin. How did I choose which one is best for me? I wanted one that had all the good stuff and none of the bad stuff. SmartyPants Men’s Complete has all the good stuff including omega 3s, lycopene, vitamins a, c, d, e, and a whole lot more. They also have none of the bad stuff: no synthetic colors, flavors or preservatives.

Not only do I take SmartyPants vitamins daily, my wife and kids do too. My wife uses the Women’s Complete and my kids use the Kids Complete vitamins, (although my kids don’t necessarily know they are taking them for health reasons they consider them a special treat).

Partnering with SmartyPants, I’m giving away a family pack of Men’s, Women’s, and Kids Complete vitamins. To enter all you have to do is leave a comment below stating how you keep yourself or someone in your family healthy. Also for five extra entries into the sweepstakes please follow SmartyPants (@smartyhealth) on Instagram and leave your Instagram handle below with your comment.

I might be almost “over the hill,” but with a better diet, more exercise and a daily multivitamin, I’m sure looking forward to what’s on the other side of that hill.
