8 Great Bakeries in Indy to Satisfy Your Cupcake Cravings

November 10 is National Vanilla Cupcake Day, but in reality, any day that ends in a “Y” is a good day to get a cupcake! Fun fact: Did you know that the first cupcake recipe was created in 1776? Today, cupcakes are a favorite treat for many, and you can find an amazing offering of cupcakes that come in a wide variety flavors, fillings and designs.

In celebration of all things cupcake, here is a list of bakeries around Indy where you can pick up one (or a dozen) cupcakes and other sweet treats. 

Cake Bake Kreations

Not technically a bakery, Cake Bake Kreations is more of a fun experience for the whole family. This DIY cupcake studio offers plain cupcakes for purchase, and then icing in dozens of colors, sprinkles, a variety of toppings and candy to decorate till your heart’s content. Be sure to register in advance and celebrate a birthday party, family night out or date night.

Cretia Cakes

6066 E. 82nd Street, Indianapolis

LaCretia, the baker extraordinaire behind Cretia Cakes, makes everything from scratch, including custom cakes and cookies. But her signature vanilla, red velvet and strawberry cupcakes are definitely the things to try. LaCretia was awarded a contract with the 2012 Super Bowl XLVI for her variety of goodies, and has been seen on the Home Shopping Network (HSN) with custom pies, cobblers and an assortment of Southern baked goods. 

The Flying Cupcake

Five locations around Indianapolis

The Flying Cupcake has bakeries in five locations around Indy, from Greenwood to Carmel, but it’s possible you’ve tried one of their tasty cupcakes from two food trucks, nicknamed Petunia and Penelope. The trucks have driven all over Indianapolis and beyond to offer a variety of flavors, from the Vanilla Candyland cupcake to Butterbeer and KooKoo for Coconuts, making a name for themselves and their giant confections.

Gigi’s Cupcakes offers gourmet cupcakes in unique flavors, like affogado (a vanilla bean cake “drowned” in sweet espresso soak and frosting), Kentucky bourbon and bananas foster. They also offer gluten-free goodies, too.

Joy’s Cakery

Offering cupcakes and cakes by the slice, Joy’s Cakery is family-run bakery that has been in the baking business since 2013. Stop by their Plainfield shop to pick up cupcakes individually, or put in a custom order for cupcakes for birthdays or other celebrations.

Smallcakes bakes and frosts 18 signature flavors every morning, fresh from scratch. In addition to their popular vanilla and chocolate flavors, they also feature seasonal and special flavors, such as maple bacon, hot fudge sundae and wedding cake.

Two Chicks Whisky Business

From a bakery food truck to their brick-and-mortar Two Chicks Whisky Business shop, Rhonda and Paige have been making desserts from scratch and serving up homemade cobblers, cheesecakes and of course, cupcakes. Walk into the store and purchase a single cupcake or a dozen from the daily-changing menu. Whether its apple butter spice or cookies n’ cream, it’s bound to be worth the trip.
