The Show Must Go On

(Westfield, IN) Christian Youth Theater’s cast of The Secret Garden smile, sing and dance through their Friday night rehearsal. It’s amazing, really.

Two weeks ago, the ceiling of their warehouse and set shop caved in. Lynn Ducat, Warehouse Manager at CYT said, “We walked in, and some of our Secret Garden set and building materials were covered in debris. One of our set trees what holding up a part of the roof, stopping it from falling in even more.” A “Do Not Enter” sign was immediately placed on the door, and set builders and volunteers weren’t allowed to go in and retrieve what was left of their set.

But—67 cast members and 7 crew members, all between the ages of 8 and 18, were rehearsing for hours each week. The set was finally retrieved, repaired, and building began again, thanks to the kind staff at Westfield High School. “It was convenient, because that was the location of our show,” commented Tyler Hutchinson, CYT’s Artistic Director. The Secret Garden seemed to be on the right track again.

Until Thursday night, when the news stations broke the story that Westfield High School’s stage had collapsed during their presentation of American Pie. “My phone went crazy. What really touched me was that all these kids and parents were much more worried about the well-being of the American Pie performers than they were about our show,” stated Laura Baltz, CYT Managing Director. The CYT kids flooded Facebook with well wishes for all those at Westfield High School.

The next morning, reality set in. The Secret Garden didn’t have a stage. And opening night was one week away. Parents made calls and brain stormed for a new location, and finally—Monon Trail Elementary School welcomed the group. One actress was heard saying, “Thank goodness. I really wanted to wear that tutu.”

The show must go on.
