The IMS Museum Reopens: A Fresh Look at Racing History, Just in Time for May

Start your engines, Indy — the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is back and better than ever! After a 17-month renovation and a $60.5 million transformation, the museum has reopened its doors with a completely reimagined experience for race fans of all ages.

The renovation marks the first in more than 40 years, leaving the museum looking unrecognizable. With 40,000 square feet of new exhibit space, the updated museum invites guests to step into the world of the Indianapolis 500. Highlights include high-tech racing simulators, a hands-on pit stop challenge, and the adrenaline-pumping “Starting Line Experience.”

The Starting Line Experience includes a seven-minute video that surrounds the audiences with the sights and sounds of Race Day on a massive 80-foot LED screen. The first row cars of the current year’s race are displayed in the room as a unique touch.

The museum offers seven permanent galleries and three rotating ones now showcase everything from historic winning cars to rarely seen racing artifacts. The museum currently includes a permanent gallery honoring the four, four-time winners of the Indianapolis 500.

Whether you’re a lifelong IndyCar fan or just curious to learn more, the new IMS Museum is designed for everyone. “I’m thrilled to welcome guests back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum after a massive renovation that finished on time and under budget,” said Joe Hale, IMS Museum President. “With the support from countless community partners and donors, we have made the IMS Museum a cultural destination for all ages celebrating the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis 500.”

The museum also places a big emphasis on inclusion and education. There’s a new STEAM classroom for field trips and summer camps, a sensory-friendly wellness room, and even a racing simulator that can be driven using just the steering wheel — no pedals required.
