“Where to travel with a baby?” This was the question my wife and I asked ourselves as we looked ahead to fall break with our 10 month old. After some thought and our daughter being able to say na na na (the ending to Sava-nnah) we set forth to check out the historic city of Savannah, Georgia. Planning the Flight and Packing with BabyQuip One question my wife and I get asked a lot when traveling with a baby under 10 months is, “How do you fly with all of your daughter’s equipment?” Let’s face it, traveling anywhere with baby equipment can be exhausting, especially if it means getting on a plane. BabyQuip to the rescue! My wife and I have now used an app called BabyQuip for two plane trips since our daughter was born. First, to Denver, Colorado when our daughter was five months old and most recently to Savannah. BabyQuip was developed to ease the stress most families face when it comes to flying with little ones. After downloading the app, the first step is to enter your destination and travel dates. From there, you will provide a specific address and time where you would like to have the equipment dropped off. What’s great about this company is that you can search for specific name branded cribs, car seats, high chairs, baby monitors and more that you and your baby may already be using at home. We were surprised at the wide range of equipment from rubber duckies to even baby gates. If you have ever traveled on a plane with a little one, you know how suitcase space can get tight. BabyQuip even has the option to add on diapers and baby wipes to your equipment rental. Exploring Savannah's Parks and Trolley Tours One of the best parts about taking a baby or small child to Savannah is that you have parks. Twenty-two square parks to be exact! You can explore parts of the city via car or stroller, and by a trolley tour that allows you to jump on and off at 15 stops. If you are taking little ones, I would highly recommend the Old Town Trolley company. The tour guides are incredibly knowledgeable and the trolleys are very family-friendly including spaces at the front of the trolley to hold strollers. Exciting Day Trips to Beaches What’s great about traveling to Savannah is that you can also do day trips to Tybee Island (25 minutes away) and Hilton Head Island (45 minutes away) for beach days! We loved going to Tybee Island. The drive is short and takes you through marshland to less busy public beaches. Hilton Head Island is also a common family destination. Staying in Savannah and Sightseeing While researching where to stay in Savannah, we found an Airbnb two blocks from Forsyth Park. Forsyth Park is arguably one of the prettiest squares in Savannah with Spanish moss trees that surround the fountain. Other highlighted areas we enjoyed were the Cathedral Basilica of St. John, City Market, and River Street. If you are looking to find a picturesque place to take a family photo, you will want to travel to the Wormsloe State Historic Site. Once you enter the park, there is a mile-long drive that includes over four hundred majestic oaks that create a spectacular moss-covered canopy over the main road that cuts through the property. The main road, Oak Avenue, has been featured in films for over 60 years with the most recent production being the musical adaptation of The Color Purple. Engaging Young Minds at Museums and Art Centers If you are traveling with small children, one of the places you will want to make sure to visit is the Jepson Center & Telfair Children's Art Museum (CAM). Entry into this museum gives you access to three buildings. The Jepson Center has three floors. The second and third floor is where you will find the new Telfair Children’s Art Museum. This exhibit opened up in July of 2023 and provides experiences for all ages and styles of learning using modern technologies, immersive environments, and low-tech and hands-on activities. With the admission of your ticket, you also have access to two other buildings, the Telfair Academy and the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Headquarters. The Telfair Academy is the oldest public art museum in the South, first opening its doors in 1886. This building has beautiful masterworks of American Impressionism. In the Owens-Thomas House, you can take a tour to see one of the earliest systems of indoor plumbing, an indoor bridge, parterre gardens, and an insight into how each room was used during that time period. Savour the Savannah Flavours Finally, Savannah is for foodies! There are a plethora of restaurants and coffee shops that provide a wide variety of food and beverages. Restaurants such as the Olde Pink House provide a unique dining experience that combines incredible food with historical truths and folklore within the oldest building in the city. (Pro tip: Make sure to get a reservation.) To satisfy your sweet tooth, Leopold’s Ice Cream is a local staple that has been around for over 100 years. Savannah offers everything from beautiful, historic fine dining establishments to small, cozy “mom and pop” shops. Whether you are looking for a longer vacation or a quick weekend getaway, Savannah truly has something for everyone!
