Kawachinagano Japanese Garden sits tucked behind Carmel City Hall, a quiet little spot that's easy to miss if you don't know where to look. It sits just off the Monon Trail, making it an easy stop for walkers and cyclists who want a break. Families can bring a picnic and spend an afternoon here. The garden follows traditional Japanese design. A gateway opens onto a winding path that loops around a koi pond dotted with lily pads. Sculptures of cranes (a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture) and stone lanterns are scattered throughout. Benches face the pond, so you can sit and watch the koi swim by or the geese gather at the water's edge. They bloom in spring, filling the garden with soft pink flowers, which is why Kawachinagano has become such a popular spot for engagement and family photos. How to get to Kawachinagano Japanese Garden There are two ways in: by car or from the Monon Trail. If you're on the trail, look for a small pedestrian bridge with red railings just south of Carmel City Hall. It leads straight to the garden. If you're driving, follow signs for Carmel City Hall. There's a free parking lot for the garden. The History of Kawachinagano Japanese Garden Kawachinagano City in Osaka, Japan sent a research group to Carmel in 1993. A year later, the Sister City agreement was signed at Lovely Hall in Kawachinagano. Carmel Sister Cities Inc. and the Kawachinagano International Friendship Association drew up the agreement to guide future activities between the two cities. Since then, the two cities have traded visits and collaborated on projects for decades. Those have included exchanges between police and fire departments, student picture exchanges, study abroad opportunities, musical concerts, and participation in Carmel's International Arts Festival. Upcoming Events 2026 Carmel Japan Spring Fest: May 4, 2026 Carmel Japan Spring Fest celebrates the season with food, cultural performances, cosplay, and hands-on family activities. Guests can sample Japanese dishes, watch local performances, and take photos with cosplayers. It's also a chance to see the updated Carmel Japanese Garden and learn more about Carmel's sister city, Kawachinagano. Admission is free.
