Parke County

The most important thing for families to know about the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival is that this is not one giant festival ground. The 10-day event spreads across 10 festival locations throughout Parke County, with 31 historic covered bridges, small-town vendor markets, working mills, historic buildings and a lot of festival food in between. The festival runs Oct. 9–18, 2026, and there is no general admission ticket. Families can spend the day wandering a couple of festival towns and driving past covered bridges without paying admission, although parking, food, shopping and optional bus tours can add to the cost. For Indianapolis families making a day trip, the best strategy is not to attempt all 10 stops. Pick two or three locations that fit what your family actually wants to do, download the bridge map before leaving home and expect the drive between communities to be part of the outing. Rockville serves as festival headquarters and is generally open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rockville stays open until 8 p.m. on the first Saturday and closes at 5 p.m. on the final Sunday. Most of the other festival locations operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tangier has slightly different hours, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. No ticket is required to attend the festival. Organizers specifically warn visitors about scammers attempting to sell festival admission tickets, so do not send anyone money for entry. Optional guided bus tours do require paid tickets, and parking policies vary from one festival location to another. Weekends bring the heaviest crowds, particularly around Rockville and the most popular bridge routes. Families who can visit on a weekday will generally have an easier time getting around. On a Saturday or Sunday, arriving near opening time is worth the early alarm. Trying to check every location off the list in one day turns a fall festival into a lot of getting in and out of the car. For a first visit with kids, two major festival locations plus a few covered bridges is a very full day. Rockville and Billie Creek Village work particularly well together because free wagon rides connect the two. Add Bridgeton, Mansfield or another smaller community if everyone still has energy. Families who care more about bridges and scenery than shopping can do the opposite: choose one festival community for lunch and activities, then spend more of the day following one of the color-coded bridge routes. The official Parke County Covered Bridge Festival website includes a downloadable county map. Save it to a phone before leaving home. Cell service can become unreliable once thousands of festival visitors arrive. The best Parke County Covered Bridge Festival stops with kids Billie Creek Village: Our pick for families If the kids need more than rows of vendor booths, Billie Creek Village is one of the strongest places to build a family visit around. The historic village has three covered bridges, Beeson, Billie Creek and Leatherwood Station, along with a schoolhouse, two churches, historic buildings, a general store, crafts and festival food. The biggest logistical perk is the free wagon ride connecting Billie Creek Village with downtown Rockville. Families can park once, visit two major festival locations and give little legs a break in between. Parking at Billie Creek Village is $10, but there is no separate admission charge. Billie Creek also advertises evening haunted hayrides during the festival. Times and pricing are not listed on the county festival page, so check with Billie Creek Village before making that part of the day's promise to the kids. Bridgeton: The classic covered bridge stop Bridgeton combines a covered bridge, working mill and a large festival area in one historic district. Families can see the Bridgeton Covered Bridge and Bridgeton Mill, visit the old schoolhouse and Case Log Cabin, browse vendors and stop at the food court. The town also has a park, making this a better place than most for families who need a little space away from shopping booths. The mill is particularly useful with school-age kids because there is something concrete to see beyond shopping. Bridgeton Mill is a working gristmill that dates to 1823 and still sells its own flours and cornmeals, and the surrounding historic buildings give parents plenty to point out without turning the day into a formal history lesson. Montezuma: A smart stop when parents need easy logistics Montezuma deserves more attention from families. The official festival guide specifically notes free parking and clean restrooms, two details that become considerably more interesting once children are involved. Montezuma also has guided tractor-pulled wagon tours focused on the historic Wabash and Erie Canal and B&O Railroad Bridge, plus craft demonstrations, antiques and plenty of food. Crullers, roast hog, ham and beans and pork barbecue are among the local specialties. For dessert, the local Tasty Freeze is a nearby stop for ice cream. Clay Plant Market: A quieter festival stop Families who have had enough of the biggest crowds can work Clay Plant Market into the route. Located outside downtown Bloomingdale, the market has local makers, pottery, coffee vendors, food trailers, open space and ample free on-site parking. It does not have the massive vendor count of Mansfield or the landmark bridge-and-mill combination of Bridgeton. That is also part of the appeal when everyone could use a lower-key stop. Mecca: Good for a shorter history stop Mecca pairs its 1872 covered bridge with a restored one-room schoolhouse and a large tent of handmade craft vendors. Parking is free. Families can see both pieces of history without committing to one of the festival's largest shopping areas, making it a useful stop to combine with a scenic drive. If lunch lines up, the Mecca Tavern, the county's oldest operating tavern, sits a quarter-mile west and is known for its breaded tenderloin sandwiches. A quick guide to all 10 festival locations Every community has its own specialty. Here's the parent-friendly shorthand for deciding where to spend the day: Rockville: Festival headquarters, courthouse-square vendors, food, information booths and the departure point for guided bus tours. Hours: 9 a.m.–6 p.m., until 8 p.m. the first Saturday and until 5 p.m. the final Sunday. Billie Creek Village: Three covered bridges, historic buildings, schoolhouse, general store and free wagon transportation to Rockville. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Bloomingdale: Homemade apple butter, food and local crafts at the historic Friends Meeting House, plus free parking. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Bridgeton: Working mill, covered bridge, historic buildings, food court, live entertainment and a large vendor area. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Clay Plant Market: Pottery, local makers, coffee, food trucks, open space and free parking. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mansfield: Hundreds of vendors along with the historic Mansfield Roller Mill and Mansfield Covered Bridge. This is a strong choice when shopping is a major part of the plan. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mecca: 1872 Mecca Covered Bridge, restored one-room schoolhouse, handmade crafts and free parking. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Montezuma: Canal wagon tours, craft demonstrations, free parking, restrooms and traditional festival food. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Rosedale: Indoor crafts and festival food at the Civic Center, including a sit-down chicken and noodles dinner, plus free parking and two nearby covered bridges. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Tangier: Famous buried beef, homemade pies, indoor dining, local crafts, free parking and five nearby covered bridges. Hours: 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Should families take a covered bridge bus tour? The festival's guided bus tours run Oct. 9–17 and cost $45 per person. Tours leave from the Parke County Courthouse in Rockville and follow either the North Route or South Route, with stops at festival communities and views of five covered bridges on each route. Tickets are sold online, and the purchase receipt serves as the boarding ticket. No physical tickets are issued. The North Route travels through Tangier and Bloomingdale and includes West Union, Marshall, Rush Creek and Jackson covered bridges, plus a drive-by view of Catlin. The South Route visits Montezuma, Mecca and Rosedale while covering Sim Smith, Phillips, Mecca, Roseville and Thorpe Ford covered bridges. For adults and older children interested in the history, a guided tour removes much of the work of figuring out the backroads. Families with younger kids may prefer driving themselves so bathroom, snack and movement breaks can happen whenever necessary. If booking a tour, make it one of the day's main activities instead of trying to squeeze it between several towns. Passengers must check in at the information booth at the corner of Market Street and U.S. 36 at least 15 minutes before departure, and the buses do not wait for late passengers. Refunds require at least seven days' notice. Current tour information and tickets are available on the official Parke County Covered Bridge Festival bus tour page. Festival food is part of the plan This is one outing where choosing the lunch stop in advance makes sense because different communities are known for different foods. Tangier is the home of buried beef and has indoor dining at its Community Building, along with homemade pies. Bloomingdale is known for apple butter, soups, barbecue sandwiches and pies. Montezuma serves crullers, roast hog, ham and beans and pork barbecue. The official festival food guide also highlights traditional favorites including tenderloins, soup beans and cornbread. With kids, there is no prize for waiting until everyone is starving before figuring out which town has lunch. If one particular food is part of the reason for going, make that community an anchor stop rather than hoping to stumble across the same item elsewhere. Parking, cash, strollers and other things parents should know Bring cash. Festival organizers specifically warn that heavy visitor traffic can make cell service unreliable, which can leave vendors unable to process card payments. Download the map before arriving. Do not count on pulling it up once cell service slows down. Parking is not the same everywhere. Montezuma, Bloomingdale, Clay Plant Market, Mecca, Rosedale and Tangier advertise free parking. Billie Creek Village charges $10. Other locations handle parking independently, so do not assume every lot is free. Scooter rentals are limited. The festival says mobility scooter rentals are available only in Bridgeton and Mansfield, subject to availability. Golf carts are not allowed. Leave pets at home when possible. Festival organizers recommend it because of the crowds and note that pets may have limited access to buildings and grounds. Service animals are the exception. There is no published festivalwide stroller or accessibility guide. The festival directs those questions to each individual community, so families using wheelchairs or accessibility equipment should check before visiting. For toddlers, bringing a stroller or wagon is worth considering simply because a festival day involves plenty of walking. Weekends are the busiest. If Saturday or Sunday is the only option, start early and resist the urge to schedule five different communities. A realistic Parke County Covered Bridge Festival day with kids For a first visit, start in Rockville near 9 a.m. Walk the courthouse square, let everyone get their first round of festival food or shopping out of their system and stop by the information booth at Ohio and Market streets with any questions. From Rockville, take the free wagon ride to Billie Creek Village. Kids can see the three covered bridges, schoolhouse and other historic buildings while parents get a break from moving the car and finding another parking spot. After Rockville and Billie Creek, choose one larger afternoon destination. Bridgeton is a good fit for families who want the classic bridge-and-working-mill experience. Mansfield makes more sense if shopping is the priority. Montezuma works well when free parking, restrooms and a wagon tour sound particularly appealing. On the way between stops, work a few covered bridges into the drive. That gives families the part of the festival that makes Parke County different without requiring an ambitious attempt to see all 31 in one day. Pick the towns that give the kids something to see besides vendor booths, leave room for bridge stops and snacks, and accept that seeing three great places is better than spending the afternoon racing toward location No. 10.
