The historic village has three covered bridges, Beeson, Billie Creek and Leatherwood Station, along with a schoolhouse, two churches, historic buildings, a general store, crafts and festival food. The biggest logistical perk is the free wagon ride connecting Billie Creek Village with downtown Rockville. Families can park once, visit two major festival locations and give little legs a break in between. Parking at Billie Creek Village is $10, but there is no separate admission charge. Billie Creek also advertises evening haunted hayrides during the festival. Times and pricing are not listed on the county festival page, so check with Billie Creek Village before making that part of the day's promise to the kids. Bridgeton: The classic covered bridge stop Bridgeton combines a covered bridge, working mill and a large festival area in one historic district. Families can see the Bridgeton Covered Bridge and Bridgeton Mill, visit the old schoolhouse and Case Log Cabin, browse vendors and stop at the food court. The town also has a park, making this a better place than most for families who need a little space away from shopping booths. The mill is particularly useful with school-age kids because there is something concrete to see beyond shopping. Bridgeton Mill is a working gristmill that dates to 1823 and still sells its own flours and cornmeals, and the surrounding historic buildings give parents plenty to point out without turning the day into a formal history lesson. Mecca: Good for a shorter history stop Mecca pairs its 1872 covered bridge with a restored one-room schoolhouse and a large tent of handmade craft vendors. Parking is free. Families can see both pieces of history without committing to one of the festival's largest shopping areas, making it a useful stop to combine with a scenic drive. Hours: 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Should families take a covered bridge bus tour? The festival's guided bus tours run Oct. 9–17 and cost $45 per person. Tours leave from the Parke County Courthouse in Rockville and follow either the North Route or South Route, with stops at festival communities and views of five covered bridges on each route. Tickets are sold online, and the purchase receipt serves as the boarding ticket. No physical tickets are issued. The North Route travels through Tangier and Bloomingdale and includes West Union, Marshall, Rush Creek and Jackson covered bridges, plus a drive-by view of Catlin. The South Route visits Montezuma, Mecca and Rosedale while covering Sim Smith, Phillips, Mecca, Roseville and Thorpe Ford covered bridges.
