5 Tips for Watching Fireworks with Kids

Choose a viewing spot with an exit plan: A great fireworks view is nice. Being trapped in a parking lot with tired kids at 10:45 p.m. is less nice. Pick a spot that gives your family a clear view and a realistic way out.

Bring hearing protection: Fireworks can be a lot for babies, toddlers and kids with sensory sensitivities. Ear protection can make the difference between a fun family memory and leaving before the first boom.

Talk through safety rules before it gets dark: Remind kids to stay close, avoid fireworks debris and listen when it’s time to move. Fireworks nights are crowded, loud and distracting, so the safety talk works better before everyone is overstimulated.

Be careful with sparklers: Sparklers can reach extremely high temperatures and cause burns. If your family uses them, supervise closely, keep kids spaced apart and have water nearby.

Pack like it’s still July in Indiana: Bring water, bug spray, sunscreen for earlier festivals, snacks and a small first aid kit. Fireworks may be the main event, but the waiting is usually where parenting happens.
