Bridgeton Civil War Days

About 90 minutes west of Indianapolis, a small Parke County town turns a few blocks of its historic district into a Civil War camp for one weekend. Bridgeton Civil War Days runs Aug. 29–30 in Bridgeton, Ind., with battle reenactments, military drills, period camps, signal corps demonstrations, pioneer living demonstrations, artisans and vendors. Instead of looking at history behind museum glass, kids can walk through the camps and talk with the soldiers and civilians portraying life between 1861 and 1865. Admission and parking are free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Battles, camps and military drills The battle reenactments take place in the hayfield, while the military camps and drills are set up on the grounds around the historic 1878 House. Families can meet Union and Confederate soldiers along with civilians portraying people who lived through the era. Signal corps demonstrations and sutlers round out the military side, while crafters and pioneer demonstrations broaden the weekend beyond the battlefield. Sutlers were civilian merchants who sold supplies to soldiers, so this is a look at daily army life away from the fighting. The reenactment spreads across more of Bridgeton than the hayfield. Images from earlier events show infantry drills within sight of the covered bridge and mill, artillery in the field and reenactors moving along Big Raccoon Creek during skirmishes. The historic town becomes part of the setting rather than simply serving as the backdrop. Organizers have not posted an hour-by-hour schedule, including exact battle times. Past schedules have included morning drills and an early-afternoon skirmish, but those times aren't published. Check the official event page or call before leaving Indianapolis if the battle reenactment is the main reason for your trip. The historic Bridgeton setting is part of the day The event is held around the 1878 House and several neighboring historic properties, which makes the setting considerably more interesting than a reenactment staged in an empty field. The Bridgeton 1878 House was built as the home of the local miller. Nearby, the 1822 Case Log Cabin was the original Parke County home of pioneer Seba H. Case and hosts pioneer demonstrations during Bridgeton's special events. The 1878 Barn is also part of the complex and opens for vendors on event weekends. Together, the house, cabin, barn and surrounding grounds let families move between Civil War-era camps and buildings that actually date to the 19th century. Don't skip the Bridgeton Mill and covered bridge The event also puts families within a short walk of two of Parke County's best-known landmarks: the Bridgeton Mill and the Bridgeton Covered Bridge. The working gristmill traces its history to 1823 and uses large French Buhr stones to grind wheat into flour and corn into meal. The mill is open daily from April through early December, opening at 10 a.m. with closing times that vary, so it fits easily into a Civil War Days visit. Organizers say food will be available at the Mill Snack Shop during the event. Just beside the mill is the Bridgeton Covered Bridge, spanning Big Raccoon Creek above the mill dam and waterfall. The original 1868 bridge was destroyed by arson in 2005. The community rebuilt it using a historically accurate design, and the new bridge was dedicated in 2006. That gives this outing plenty to do after the main event. Families can walk through the covered bridge, visit the mill and explore the historic district without adding another admission charge. Food and shopping during Civil War Days Families can buy food during the event, with organizers listing both Collom's and the Mill Snack Shop as options. Artisans and vendors are also set up throughout the weekend. Collom's General Store sits less than a block from the covered bridge and opens for selected Bridgeton special events. Other shops around the historic district may also be open, although Bridgeton's official site notes that not every shop operates during every event. Good to know before taking kids The hands-on nature of the event is its biggest advantage for families. Kids can talk directly with reenactors, walk through period camps and watch demonstrations rather than spending the day reading signs. One consideration for kids who are sensitive to sudden loud noises: rifles and artillery have been part of past reenactments, so hearing protection may be worth packing. Families looking for a quieter visit can spend more time around the camps, historic buildings, vendors and mill and keep some distance from the battle area. Parts of the event grounds are grass and gravel around the mill, creek and historic buildings rather than paved walkways. If you're bringing a stroller, one that handles rougher ground will be easier. Bridgeton is about 70 miles from Indianapolis. Since admission and parking are free, it works well as a day trip for families interested in history without committing to a ticketed attraction once they arrive.
