Journey Under the Sea with The Little Mermaid

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you may be wondering what you can do to spoil your loved ones. Wonder no more – we have just the idea for you! How about surprising them with an incredible pre-Valentine’s Day date night? Now through February 12, you and your family can journey under the sea with The Little Mermaid. This family-friendly production is being performed live on-stage at the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre and is guaranteed to be an unforgettable evening for the entire family.

Last night, I had the complete pleasure of taking my daughter to this energetic, bubbly, colorful performance complete with all of the characters that we know and love from the classic Disney animated movie – Ariel, Prince Eric, King Triton, Flounder, Scuttle, Sebastian and the evil sea witch Ursula with her two loyal sidekicks Flotsam and Jetsam.

My daughter has grown out of the princess phase, but that did not matter one bit. She may not have been in a princess dress, but she did ask that I do her hair before leaving the house. I was tempted to use my dinglehopper, but opted for the brush instead.

This is a production for all ages and we were both captivated from start to finish. The mermaids are in constant motion and even soar through the air with a screen of bubbles behind, giving the appearance of really being in the water. The performances by the actors and actresses are phenomenal as they fly, swim and glide across stage in their beautiful costumes singing the songs we know and love (and some fun new songs as well) with their incredible voices accompanied by the beautiful music of the orchestra.

There are moments when you will find yourself grinning from ear-to-ear and laughing out loud – like during the lively, colorful performance of the classic song, Under the Sea or when Chef Louis is preparing his seafood culinary masterpiece and Sebastian shows up unexpectedly. There are funny moments, heart-warming moments and some moments that may be a little frightening for the very young audience members. Not so scary that they can’t be in attendance, but standard bad-guy Disney fairy tale scary which is just scary enough that you may want to warn them before going in.

Ursula is the perfect villain. Her costume, make-up, voice and body language are spot on. Her two malicious companions, Flotsam and Jetsam, glide around stage on wheels in lit-up electrifying costumes. Their performances, while scary at times, are really fun to watch. Honestly, the casting of this production could not have been better – all of the performances were really spectacular.

This was an evening that will be etched in my mommy-heart forever.

I love it when I have one-on-one time with my children. As a mother of four, I have found taking the time to be with each of my children individually is extremely important. I get to know them better when we are away from all of the excitement at home. I am able to listen better and I have found that they share more openly when it is just the two of us. It was our own special pre-Valentine’s Day mommy-daughter date night. One that I will never forget.
