These past few years, I’ve had cancer on my mind more than any other time in my life. First, my mom was diagnosed with cancer several years ago. Then, shortly after that, so was my sister-in-law. Then, two breast cancer diagnoses, only a week apart, hit our staff at Indy’s Child. I’ve always been invested in my health, but this string of cancer diagnoses was enough to make me double-down on getting the proper screenings and take a hard look at my health habits. It also opened up my eyes to some of the wonderful facilities we have right here in central Indiana.
Hancock Health is one of those facilities. Centrally located on Indy’s east side, Hancock Health offers compassionate and innovative ways to detect and treat cancer, all in one location. I recently got to tour the medical facility and the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center in Greenfield, and I left impressed. While I hope I don’t have to ever hear the words “You have cancer” during my lifetime, I’m comforted to know that if I do, I’d be in good hands with Hancock Health. Here’s why.

Advanced Screenings That Detect Cancer Early
Early detection saves lives — period. Hancock Health offers advanced technology that helps catch cancer in its earliest stages, when treatment is most effective. These screenings include:
- Mammograms to detect breast cancer
- Pap smears to detect cervical cancer
- Colonoscopies to find early signs of colon cancer
- Lung screenings with detailed lung images to find early signs of lung cancer
- Skin checks to examine your skin for moles or spots that may be signs of skin cancer
- Blood tests to check for early indicators of cancer or other health issues
Genetic Testing to Learn Your Cancer Risk
Knowing more about your genes can help you take steps to prevent cancer. Hancock Health offers genetic testing to see if you have any changes in your genetic makeup that could raise your risk for certain cancers, such as breast, colon, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, stomach or uterine cancer. The genetic tests are easy to administer, and use only a small sample of blood or saliva.
Access to Mayo Clinic Expertise That’s Close to Home
No one should have to travel far to get the best cancer care. And with Hancock Health, they don’t have to. Hancock Health is part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, which allows Hancock doctors to work directly with Mayo Clinic experts from across the country. This means that even the toughest cancer cases can get advice and support from some of the best doctors in the world — all without leaving central Indiana. And this resource isn’t just for cancer care. Hancock Health doctors can also connect with Mayo Clinic specialists in areas like brain and nerve health, skin conditions, stomach and digestive issues, mental health and family medicine. Hancock Health is one of fewer than 50 hospitals in the world with this special connection.
