Hidden Gem: Rustic Root Tea Room

Once a month, this Southside shop gives the tiniest patrons an opportunity to have high tea with a fellow princess.

Nestled on Main Street in Beech Grove stands The Rustic Root Tea Room, a shop serving up hot cups of tea and a place to slow down and enjoy each other’s company.

The tea room opened its doors in February 2017 after owner Tammy Hanna’s husband encouraged her to act on her retirement dream of opening a tea room before she actually got to retirement. As a child, she marveled at her moms china set, admiring the delicate cups and plates, largely inspiring her dream of opening a tea room one day. Today, her dream is run alongside her sister, Jenny Wensel.

Hanna and Wensel’s main goal with the tea room is to provide a place for patrons to sit down and slow down from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with a nice cup of tea, of course.

Currently, the menu boasts a variety of sandwiches, salads, soups, desserts, and some brunch options. It also features a High Tea Time menu, which includes four high tea combinations: Cream Tea, Petite Tea, Princess Tea and Grand Tea Time.

Additionally, The Rustic Root Tea Room hosts a Princess Tea one Saturday a month, which allows the tea room’s tiniest patrons the opportunity to dress up and be princesses for the day, crown and all. Each tea features a different princess in attendance, with past attendees including Ariel, Cinderella, Jasmine and Snow White.

In addition to Princess Tea, The Rustic Root Tea Room offers Monthly Murder Mystery Dinners. This interactive dinner includes a four course meal, and a “who dunnit” murder mystery to solve. It also offers exclusive dinners planned and prepared by its head chef. Reservations and walk-ins are accepted.
