Juneteenth, observed each year on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and the last enslaved African Americans in the United States were informed of their freedom. It is a day for remembrance, learning, celebration and community.
Several Indianapolis-area museums and attractions are offering free admission for Juneteenth, with most free days taking place on Friday, June 19 or Saturday, June 20. For families, it’s a meaningful way to spend time together while learning more about Black history, culture and the ongoing work of freedom.

Conner Prairie
Conner Prairie is offering free general admission on Juneteenth, giving families a full day to explore the Fishers museum and take part in special programming connected to the history and meaning of the holiday. The free day also kicks off Civic Season at Conner Prairie, with programming that honors the spirit and significance of Juneteenth. Families can visit during regular museum hours, then stay for the evening Juneteenth Jubilee with live music, storytelling, Black-owned vendors, food trucks and family-friendly activities.

Eiteljorg Museum
The Eiteljorg Museum’s Juneteenth celebration includes free admission and a full day of performances, artmaking and community programming. This year’s theme, Juneteenth: A Celebration of Connection, focuses on the cultural spaces that have helped Black and African American communities feel safe, seen, loved and joyful. Families can expect spoken word, roller skating and Double Dutch performances, a drum circle, music from Be On It featuring Alaina Renae and hands-on art activities.

Newfields
Newfields is listed as offering free admission for Juneteenth on June 19. Indiana Historical Society
The Indiana Historical Society is offering free admission for Juneteenth on Saturday, June 20. It’s a good fit for families who want a downtown museum day with more room for conversation than chaos, which is sometimes exactly the speed a holiday weekend needs.

Indiana State Museum
The Indiana State Museum offers free admission for Juneteenth at the downtown museum and participating Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites locations. Families can explore the museum’s exhibits and take part in the day’s public programming. The museum lists Juneteenth among its free admission days, and its regular museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

NCAA Hall of Champions
The NCAA Hall of Champions is offering free admission for Juneteenth, observed on June 20. Sports-loving kids can explore exhibits covering all 24 NCAA sports, test their knowledge with trivia challenges and try hands-on sports simulators. The Hall of Champions is also an easy add-on if your family is already visiting other White River State Park attractions that day.
