Juneteenth: A Celebration of Connection at the Eiteljorg honors the legacy of June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure the freedom of all enslaved people. For its 11th annual observance, the museum connects that history to the present by highlighting cultural spaces that help Black and African American communities feel safe, seen, loved and joyful.
The celebration explores how Roller Skating and Double Dutch have served as forms of storytelling, resistance, community and confidence. Guests can experience modern dance, jump-rope interaction, spoken word, music, movement, artmaking and community connections throughout the event.
Hosted by emcee Eric Saunders, the program includes a Neo Griot Collab performance exploring the history of Double Dutch, a Roller Skate Indianapolis showcase on skating as activism, poetry by Patrice Stokes, a community drum circle by SITEAW and a headline performance by the Be On It Band feat. Alaina Renae. Guests can also visit partner tables featuring local authors, artisans and community organizations.
