The mist seems to sit suspended above the dark water that flows along the White River Greenway Trail. The warmth of summer is gone and the chill of winter is creeping into the Fall nights as they grow longer and longer with each passing day.
The century year old trees that bring a smile with their bright Fall colors in the sunlight, appear ominous as their shadows grow with the setting sun.
WHAT is that sound coming from the mist? Is it just the river trickling over a small sandbar or fallen branch? No, it sounds more like the slither of a snake, an evil thing watching you from the camouflage of the brown leaves that have fallen on the river’s edge.
Look hard enough and you will feel more than see his golden eyes that penetrate the darkness and bore into your very soul. You stand spell bound, as your fear grows, and a voice inside your head warns you to run, RUN, RUN for your life, but your feet seem heavy and unable to move.
The locals told you this would happen if you travelled alone to Old Town Waverly Park this time of year. But you wouldn’t listen, now it seems inevitable that you will join the ranks of the restless spirits that haunt this place the end of October each year. Now you understand why the flyers and posters said:
JOIN Morgan County Parks & Recreation WE once more gather together and battle the Evil that rises with the mist each Halloween. The EVIL that tries to devour all that is good in this place. Together, we will push them back into the bondage that will keep us safe one more year. NEVER GO ALONE, REMEMBER there is strength in numbers and ONLY UNITED can we overcome the HAUNTING OF WAVERLY
