An arcade with nothing but claw machines sounds like it could go one of two ways. Either my kids walk out clutching armfuls of stuffed animals, or I walk out $40 lighter with nothing to show for it. We recently visited Catch Win Clawade & Arcade in Castleton to see which way it would go.
As it turned out, it was a little bit of both.

Walking In
The space at 6346 E. 82nd St. in Indianapolis is filled wall to wall with claw machines. When we walked in, the manager greeted us and explained how everything worked, from play cards to the prize system. That was helpful, because at first glance, the setup can feel a little overwhelming.
Right at the front, there’s a ticket desk where you purchase your play card and exchange prizes.

The First Few (Humbling) Tries
We loaded one $40 play card for the family to share, figuring it would give both kids enough turns to really try it out. Then we dove in with zero strategy. After five or six failed attempts, I was mentally writing this place off. “This is rigged,” I thought. “We just blew $40.”
But then we looked around. Other families were pushing little pink carts overflowing with stuffed animals. Clearly, they knew something we didn’t.
So we paused, watched, and asked a few questions. The very next try, we won.
You would have thought my daughter won the lottery based on her reaction. After that, she was completely hooked. We went on to win four more times, and somehow each one felt just as exciting as the first. My kids loved loading up their cart, one stuffed animal at a time.

How It Works
Most machines cost one credit per play, with a few costing a little more. You scan your card at the machine and your turn begins. On those first few rounds, we burned a credit or two just teaching our kids the basics: lining up the claw, being patient and waiting for the right moment to press the button. My daughter kept getting too excited and pressing too early, sending the claw down onto absolutely nothing.
The Strategy That Changed Everything
After losing several times in a row, we knew we had to rethink our approach. Here’s what we picked up from watching the pros, a.k.a. the families with overflowing carts:
- Go for smaller, lighter stuffed animals. The big heavy ones are much harder for the claw to grip.
- Avoid animals wedged tightly between others. Look for ones sitting loosely or already partially separated from the pile.
- Be willing to try the same animal two or three times. Sometimes the first attempt loosens it up, and the next one pulls it out.
- Pick animals sitting close to the drop hole. The shorter the distance the claw has to carry it, the better your odds.
- Tap the button a second time to close the claw early. This gives you a little more control over timing.
- Scan the room before committing. With so many machines to choose from, it helps to pick the one that gives you the best shot.

How Prizes Work
Every stuffed animal you win is yours to keep. If you want to trade up, you can exchange three small wins for one bigger stuffed animal at the front desk. Many of the machines also display a larger prize inside. To win that one, you need to win three times on that specific machine, then trade those three in for the larger toy.
We won five animals total and thought about trading some in for a bigger prize. But when it came time to choose which ones to give up, my kids couldn’t part with any of them. So we left with all five.
Would I Take Little Kids?
Yes, but I would not expect most younger kids to do this on their own.
This felt a lot more fun when we treated it like something we were doing together instead of handing a card to the kids and hoping for the best. We all started scouting machines, debating which prize looked most winnable, and coaching each other on when to hit the button. That ended up being a big part of the fun.
If your kids are little, I would go in expecting to help a lot.
How Long Did We Play?
Our $40 play card lasted about 45 minutes. In terms of cost per hour, it’s on the pricier side for a family outing. But because the kids enjoyed it and we left with actual prizes, it felt more worthwhile than a typical arcade stop. It’s probably not something we’d do every weekend, but it could be a fun rainy day activity or occasional treat.

What to Know Before You Go
- Start with a smaller play card if you’re not sure your family will be into it. You can always add more credits later.
- Watch other players before spending credits. We learned more in two minutes of watching than we did in our first six tries.
- Younger kids will need help lining up the claw. This works better as a play-together activity than a drop-them-off-to-do-it-alone activity.
- Don’t expect to win every time. The challenge is part of the experience.
Overall, it felt less like a traditional arcade and more like a mix of strategy, luck and patience. Once we adjusted our expectations, it ended up being a fun family outing.
