Q&A with Cathedral High School:

What makes Cathedral unique?

Cathedral is an independent, private Catholic high school in the Holy Cross Tradition. Our place in the Indianapolis community is one of honor and service. Our graduates number among some of the most accomplished business, community, government, and religious leaders in the state and country. Our legacy of educating not just the mind, but the heart and spirit is perhaps our greatest asset, and we’re honored to champion inclusion as one of the most diverse schools in central Indiana. All of which combine to shape students who go on to achieve things they might never have thought possible — and to actively participate in the state’s largest and liveliest alumni network.

What is Cathedral’s age/grade range?

We serve students in grades 9-12 in high school.

What is Cathedral’s enrollment policy? Are there any key dates parents should be aware of?

Freshman applicants can apply for either “early” or “regular” admission. The early admission deadline for freshmen is October 15 and regular admission is December 15. Students seeking tuition assistance should apply for financial aid by December 15. We review transfer student applications throughout the year.

Does Cathedral High School offer financial assistance?

Yes! We offer $2.8 million in tuition assistance each year and we accept the Indiana Choice Scholarship (voucher). Students may qualify for a Merit Scholarship based on their High School Placement Test score, and we are proud to partner with the Center for Leadership Development for scholarships for incoming students who have participated in their programs.

What are the standard school day hours?

We have a four-day rotating schedule, with the school day beginning at 8:45 a.m. The school day ends at 3:15 p.m.

Does Cathedral offer before/after school care? Does Cathedral offer afterschool activities?

As a high school there is no true before or after care program. Our students, however, are welcome to campus as early as 7:00 am and can stay until 5:00 pm. Our sports programs practice both before and after school (depending on the sport) and we have a number of student activities that meet at these times as well.

Is there a uniform or dress code?

All students are required to wear Cathedral polo shirts with an optional Cathedral sweatshirt, and Cathedral uniform khaki pants. Students may choose to wear any closed-toe, closed-heel shoe. Most students wear tennis shoes.

How many children attend Cathedral? How many students are in the average classroom?

Currently, our enrollment is 1180, and class sizes vary depending on several factors. For example, we have more than 90 students in band class, but we only have five students in AP Spanish V.

Does Cathedral have a homework policy?

Homework is completely subject matter dependent. Students can expect to have homework, and many students build in a resource period for additional support and/or time to work on homework.

Does Cathedral offer support for students with special needs?

Cathedral offers learning support for students with language-based processing challenges through the Language Support Program (LSP). Some students have been identified as dyslexic, some have been labeled as learning disabled by a public school corporation, some have a reading disability, and some have been tested but have never had school support services.

The Learning Resource Center builds on Cathedral’s renowned Language Support Program that provides direct instruction for students with language-based learning differences, and that program continues to meet the needs of such students with direct instruction. The Learning Resource Center expands, and refines, the services offered to students within the Language Support Program while also offering all of the services above to students not enrolled in the Language Support Program who have diagnosed needs for accommodations.

What specialty classes / extracurricular activities does Cathedral High School offer?

Students may choose from several electives and fine arts classes in a variety of subject areas including engineering, robotics, business, journalism, broadcast journalism, speech and debate, ceramics, piano, yoga, weight lifting, and more. Nearly all students are actively involved in extracurriculars and/or varsity or club sports programs. Cathedral’s fine arts programs stand out, including the theatre program (CaTheatre), show choir, band, and choir programs. All Cathedral students participate in service hours.
