You know summer is just around the corner when the libraries start promoting their summer reading programs!
This year, the Indianapolis Public Library Summer Reading Program is called “Blast Off to Camp Read S’More.” The fun launches on June 5, 2023, but registration is going on now.
How Does the Summer Reading Program Work?
There are so many ways to earn points during the Summer Reading Program this year. In addition to reading books, you can also read a magazine, listen to an audio book, or read the newspaper. It’s all about the minutes you read, not the books. The literature doesn’t even need to come from the library, and you don’t even need a library card!
Families can use the Beanstack app to track their reading, or print a paper tracker to measure their progress. Reading by yourself, reading aloud, or having someone read to you, including audiobooks, all count. More info can be found here.
According to Devery North, School Age and Family Program Specialist with the Indianapolis Public Library, as long as you read 20 minutes a day, you will earn the maximum amount of points. Points mean prizes!
What Are the Prizes?
There are lots of awesome little prizes to pick from, but North is most excited about the color-changing cups and the dice bubble-poppers. There will also be books, stickers, snacks, and, of course, flying things!
Summer Fun in the Library
During the summer is when the children’s librarians go all out! Each of the libraries will be decorating the children’s section in a unique way to play off of the space theme. You will see planets, stars, rocket ships, and maybe an alien or two.
In addition, the Indianapolis Public Library is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. Be sure to stop by one of the branches on June 3 for the party. Word on the street is if you time your visit around 1:30 p.m., you just might get a free treat.
How to Sign Up for the Summer Reading Program
Registration for the Indianapolis Public Library Summer Reading Program has begun, and goes through the summer. Participants can register online here, use the Beanstack app to register, or register in person at any Indianapolis Public Library branch.
