Tips for a safe Halloween
These reminders draw on Halloween safety guidance from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the FDA’s costume and candy safety tips.
- Swords and other costume props should be soft, flexible and easy to carry.
- Avoid going alone. Young children should walk with a trusted adult.
- Fasten reflective tape to costumes and candy bags so drivers can see you.
- Examine treats before children eat them. Set aside choking hazards for younger kids.
- Hold a flashlight so you can see the path ahead and others can see you.
- Allow time to test costume makeup on a small patch of skin 24 to 48 hours beforehand.
- Look both ways before crossing streets and use crosswalks when available.
- Leave decorative contact lenses out of the costume unless an eye care professional has prescribed and fitted them.
- Opt for sidewalks. Where there are none, walk facing traffic.
- Wear costumes and shoes that fit without trailing fabric or blocked vision.
- Eat commercially wrapped treats only after an adult checks the packaging and any allergy labels.
- Enter a home only with a trusted adult, and never accept a ride from a stranger.
